Im buying a .223 rifle and the ones I have seen (on the net and magazines) are the remington Model 700 BDL, the CZ 527 Lux or the ruger HM77R. Duffy's in Galway have the rem for €1020 new and a dealer in Wexford has the CZ for €980.

Has anyone any thoughts on any of these or recommend any others. I am also open to getting a secondhand rifle.

Ideally I would like to get fixed up with rifle and scope for €1400 - €1500 mark.

I have used the cz 527 lux in the past and found it to be a very accurate rifle;)

You could do worse than get the rifle I got, Remington VL SS Thumbhole ;)

Personally I wouldn't touch a second hand centrefire rifle, but folks differ :)

Some people find it more comfortable. Depending on the exact shape of it, it can be a bit closer to an anatomical grip. Compare the following two:

    lgsil_700vlss.jpg

On the lower one, your right hand will be closer to the vertical. Depending on your shooting position this may be more comfortable. Again, depending on your position and hand size it my also put your trigger finger in a better orientation for squeezing the trigger (closer to parallel to the barrel).

Virtually all ISSF-style rifles I've seen have either a thumbhole stock or a pistol grip which provides a similar orientation. I have no idea whether this helps for a more accurate position or whether ISSF shooters just predominantly prefer that style of rifle.

Here's an example from an aluminium stocked rifle:

Mostly I like the look of the thumbhole, it is comfortable, I do find myself quite steady with it. Not as easy in some situations as a more traditional grip. I'll be getting a custom thumbhole (oooer) for my Sako Quad eventually (does the spending ever stop...)
