vista network printing problems

Hi there, I recently bought myself a shiny new Vista laptop. It's working fine (bar one severe episode of BOD) but I'm having one lingering issue. The main PC in my house is an XP rig which is hooked up to a fairly new Samsung printer. This printer came with Vista drivers yet when I try to add the printer on the laptop as a network printer, it tries to grab the XP driver from the PC. This of course doesn't work. I've tried installing the driver locally off the CD but it makes no difference (although I haven't actually tried to hooked it directly up to the printer). I also tried adding the driver in printer sharing options on the XP macine but there's no option to add a Vista driver.

    Any ideas??

    Thanks

    Stephen

Is there a option on the XP PC to render print job on client computer?

Hi, I'm not too sure about this one to be honest.

On your XP box with the printer directly attached, click on Start and go to Printers and Faxes. Right-click on your Samsung printer and go to Properties. Is there a tab that says Advanced? There should be a button that says New Driver. I've never had to use this before, but when you click on it it starts up the Add New Device Driver wizard where you can select the Have Disk option. Share it out then and browse to it with your new laptop and hope it dishes out the Vista driver.

What I'm not sure is if this will replace the existing driver with the driver on the disk or add it to a list of available drivers. Worst case scenario iif it doesn't work is you'll have to reinstall your XP driver, which is no big deal.

There isn't that option available on the XP machine

And Using a new driver unfortunately just tries to replace the old one (which doesn't work as it's a vista driver)

Every time I connect to the printer on the vista laptop the local spooler service goes down which is quite frustrating. Been trawling around other sites and this spooler problem seems fairly common. Maybe it's just down to the particular printer I have. Is Vista SP1 out??
