I bought an airport express and have had a lot of trouble trying to get it to work.

So far I installed the airport utility, plugged in the airport express and gone through the setup.

It seemed everything was running okay when long and behold, the express wouldn't restart when the wizzard was telling it to restart.

I plugged it out and back in again, ran airport utility and it can't find the express.

    Please help :(

edit: sorry forgot to mention that this was already exchanged out for a faulty one. The faulty one was not recognised by my macbook at all

So you had installed the software for the faulty one? when you installed the software for the replacement did you get any indication that it was replacing software already on the machine or anything?

I uninstalled the sotware from the faulty one using appdelete. I then installed the new airport utility and so far it just won't recognise the airport express

Is there a way to set it up using an ethernet cable??

Had it plugged in for the last hour and it is way too hot to touch. My guess is the shop where I bought it (Spectra, Dundrum) got a bad batch of them in.

It's going back there tomorrow. Might get the airport extreme instead, cause it doesn't look like I'm gonna have much luck with this.

I returned the airport express and got an airport extreme. Cost twice the price of the express too!!

Opened the box, installed yet another copy of aiport utility and what happens, the macbook fails to find the airport extreme

Seriously need help here lads, please don't tell me my macbook's hardware is faulty

    Hi Swing

They be a bugger to get working and it looks like bonjour is falling on it's ar$e in this respect. Have you tried wiring it in to configure it like you would with most wireless routers (I know it's apple but they're not perfect). Also did you click on your wireless signal at the top of your screen to see which networks are available?

Sorry I may be asking obvious questions but you have to ask them. Also remember you have to buy the plug-in to activate your .n on the macbook and mixing .g & .n reduces both signal strenght and range on all .n routers.

I'll keep an eye on this thread and let me know how you get on.

    hey niall

thanks for getting back to me.

I have everything wired up correctly on the airport extreme. My macbook is one of the new versions; do I still need to buy the n plugin??

I literally have the airport extreme beside my mac (we're talking 10 inches) and it still won't pick it up

Swing, is it an airport express or an Airport Express Extreme or an Airport Extreme base station (like a wireless router).

When I say wired is your computer physically wired with an ethernet cable to the basestation? Depending on how old the model is you may not have to purchase the plug-in.

    airport extreme base station,

I actually don't have the ethernet connected to my macbook, I assumed it was done using wireless :o

    I'll give that a go

    cheers!

How are you accessing the internet? What will the extreme base station be for? Or is it a .n (extreme) Airport Express for streaming your music to a stereo?

using a netopia 3347 to access internet at the moment. I originally bought an airport express to extend the range of my wireless network.

Failing to do that I returned that and got a airport extreme. I figured this was a much more powerful router than my netopia

    This has yet to work.

Why don't apple use a browser config system like all the rest do?

Ok turn on the extreme base station, give it a minute or so to cycle it's power. Click on the inverted triangle type lines at the top right of your screen and look for an apple0eb2 named type network or something that isn't Eircom/Netopia/Netgear or a neighbours name. You should then be connected to the airport extreme basestation then try configuring it that might work for you.

The problem I'm having is when the airport utility is sending the setting to the airport extreme and restarts it.

At this stage the airport extreme goes missing and needs a factory reset to be recognized by my macbook.

So far today I've had 2 faulty Airport expresses and 1 faulty Airport extreme base station

    sigh :(
