In ireland any legally held airsoft device operates at 1 joule of muzzle energy or below.

This is the legal limit beyond which they become firearms.

Might I enquire as to why you want to know?

the limit for this country is 328ft per second with a 0.2gram BB, thats 1Joule in energy.,
if your buying an Airsoft gun the shop can chrono it or the skirmish sites also have chrono's.,

My son has got 2 that he has bought recently. I have found out that the limit is 1 jule in Ireland before you need a licence. Just trying to ensure that he is not breaking the law.

Well that's great to see. A responsible parent. Quite a rarity these days.

Other safety precautions to keep in mind for your son:

    1. If he is under 12, and airsoft gun might not be suitable for him. If under 16, I'd suggest only allowing him to use it under supervision.

    2. He should always use suitable eye protection. Same goes for anyone near him when he is shooting.

    3. The airsoft guns should only be used on private land, and out of the sight of members of the public. And of course, the land owners permission should be sought as well.

    4. Ensure that your son understands the legal consequences of misusing airsoft guns. If used in a criminal manner, they are treated as real guns in court. There is a mandatory sentence of 10 years imprisonment for offences commited with firearms. Using or even displaying an airsoft gun in public can result in a conviction for assault if a member of the public felt threatened. Be careful...
