The key question is what do you intend using it for?

It has a very large Hard Drive for a laptop, and Sony's screens are generally excellent. 2GB of Ram is perfect. The processor is quite old now though and the graphics are integrated meaning poor gaming performance. It also comes with Vista which is an additional resource hog. Overall, I'd imagine it would struggle a bit to be as adaptable as you would like it to be. If you could get the same laptop with XP installed instead might help make it more enjoyably responsive.

I dont mean to be kissing Dells ass these days (see my sig) but their Vostros are pretty class.
For E712 delivered you can get an:
    Intel® Core™ 2 Duo Processor T7250 (2.00 GHz, 800 MHz FSB, 2 MB L2-cache)
    2048MB 667MHz Dual Channel DDR2 SDRAM (2x1024)
    160GB (5400RPM) SATA Hard Drive
    15.4" Wide Screen WXGA+ (1440 x 900) Display with TrueLife™
    128MB nVidia® GeForce® 8400M GS
    Fixed Internal 8X DVD+/-RW Drive
Matte Jet Black with 2.0 mega pixel camera

Not a bad system. A better Processor and Graphics card then the similar priced Sony, 40Gb smaller hard drive though. The TrueLife screens are very good too.

If you do go the Dell vostro direction, switch between different series laptops and customize them the same. For 2 exact same laptops, there can be 100 euro difference in price (depending on which deal you customize).
    Any questions just ask.

If you're going to be playing even the odd game, you'll want a proper 3D card in the laptop. Something like an Nvidia 8600M will handle counterstrike very well without breaking the bank, and it's also a card that's available in lots of lappy's (sony included) so you can still pick a specific based on your other criteria.
