I want to back up old movies from an old video camcorder.

What kind of video capture device should I get for this?

What operating system are you running ? Windows Movie Maker should do the job , assuming you are running XP or Vista ....

    Im running Vista,

I want to know what hardware I need, do I need a seperate capture card? Was
reading about them and some only capture 30fps and at 720x480!! Is that really good enough - sounds very very bad to me!

Can you get graphics cards with video capture capability? Ive been looking at upgrading my card and dont know what to look out for !

What kind of camera are you trying to capture from? Does it and/or your computer have a firewire port?

Old analog camcorders will be pal type , this is what you need if you dont have a PCI slot ,

They work well enough , connect with USB2 and you should have plenty of bandwidth for this. All the cables you need are included.

Great info people thanks, the camcorder is probably 15 years old at least! Maybe even 20years old - I want to back up stuff for my parents!

No firewire port, beginning to think I might upgrade the motherboard but not 100% on the decision yet!

Hi, sorry to hijack the thread, its just I'm wondering what video capture software you would reccomend, Movie Maker just keeps crashing, not sure why as it worked perfectly before...I'm using an ADS Video Xpress USB capture device by the way..

    Thanks
