Hey all wondering if anyone can help me with this. When i start up my PS3 my tv remains blank until i either put in a game or the game that is in the drive loads up. I cannot get the operating system screen to show at all. Games play fine once loaded. Its a sony 50" rear projection tv if it makes any difference.

Sounds like you have the PS3 display set to resolution your TV can't support. Most games play in 720p so your XMB must be at 1080i/p.
To reset display settings, turn off PS3. Then hold down the PS3 power button for 10 seconds till you hear it beep twice. It should then auto-detect connection type and suitable resolution.
