In before lock - post in the Travel and Holidays forum for advice - this forum is for post-travel info. Do a search over there too - plenty on Japan. If this is moved or you start a new thread I'll throw in some recommendations.

    Advice? Ask clearer questions ;)

Advice about what in particular. Unless you help people out with information about the topics you want to know, they can't answer :)

Its way cheaper than you think, people are dead sound and will help you loads but dont have a word of english, eat in that burger place (cant remember the name but its green!) its lovely, portions are tiny everywhere, make sure to go for a night out in Shinjinku (in Tokyo), electricail stuff isnt that advanced/cheaper than it is here, get a pocket guide, its handy if only for the metro map, go to the Tokyo museum, the fish market is crazy and worth a look if your bothered, theres hardly any Honda Civics.

Decent thread on Tokyo here: http://www.boards.ie/vbulletin/showthread.php?t=2055100411

My memory of Kyoto is vague - I did a day trip severely hungover after New Years in Osaka which is only a short train ride away. My memories are that it had a very mellow vibe compared to the big cities and it was easy to walk around some of the main points of interest from the train station.

We visited these places all of which were very cool.
    1. Sanjusangendo Temple
    2. Gion district - Geisha or more correctly Geiko can be seen shuffling about.
    3. Yasaka shrine.

Kyoto is where Charlotte goes for the day on the shinkansen in Lost in Translation - she visits Heian Shrine and Nanzenji Temple.

Japan will blow you away - enjoy.
