is it just me or do ulster bank ATM's annoy the hell out of other people aswell?. They seems to be made by Fisher Price (powered by FPOS). they are just so god damn slow to do anything, accept the card, read the card, enter the PIN, dispense the cash. i can physically feel myself aging and see the sun crossing the sky while decaying in line at these things

    sry rant over...

Meh, I don't find them any different from any other bank ATMs. The ones in Spar/Centra are always going to be slow as they connect up using dialup/ISDN line and not a fast connection like a proper bank one.

Had an Ulster Bank ATM reset on me once, one minute I was entering my PIN the next I got a "Windows XP is restarting" screen. Ugh.... :(

Not sure about the ones on the street, but the Merchat ATMs (Ulster Bank) in Spar etc.. are on Dial Up. That accounts for a lot of the slow speeds. And yes, it's very annoying!

Other better banks tend to use 'always on' ISDN (or faster) for their merchant ATMS..

    What he said.

The EasyCash ones are the worst of any ATM though, I had my card swallowed by one the day before I went on holiday (fantastic timing) recently, had to go to the customer service desk in Dundrum Town centre to get the number for the company. Rang the company and got on to a very confused customer service rep, who couldn't quite understand what was going on, but eventually informed me that the only thing that can be done is for me to cancel the card and order a new one.

    Bastards.

Yes and AIB ones too the interface doesnt seem to have changed in 10years Newer Permanent Tsb ones are great even have a guard so nobody can see you typing your pin.

the ones in shops dont wind me up so much i expect them to be slower as they are on dial ups and all that. Its just with the ulster bank ones (the ones in the wall by the banks) even entering you pin takes forever as it seems to stick between every digit

they may not have changed the interface, but its always quicker and easy to navigate, ill take function and performance over looks any day :)

I don't really care about how long they take, as long as they give out tenners....

    BOI ATMs all the way

    PTSB ftw!

Fast card-grabber, and fancy lights an colours :P

They even have finger covers :)

No need to change a system that works. I prefer the AIB machines over all others; they dont waste time bogged down in bull****.

that said PTSB ones are very good at snapping your card up, and thats where the AIB ones fail.

As for pin-guard: its called a wallet.

i used one of their ATM's about 30 mins ago and all the on screen part was just as quick as any other ones i use. The only slow part was the length of time it took my card to come out. I actually thought it was stuck it ejected that slow.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 6,123 ✭✭✭stepbar

I'm waiting for the day when "some" Irish bank comes up with a system where a customer can apply for a loan, overdraft etc through an ATM machine. Imagine the amount of people who use ATM's on a daily basis.... thousands.... I know it can be done.

As for the crappy ATM's best to use laser.... no hassle.. and no chance of fraud TBh.

what annoys me most is the fact that i can never get a tennar when i want one

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 62 ✭✭Bmark

Ulster bank machines are cursed !!!if it ever spits the card back and says cannot connect with your bank, check your bank the next day - it happened me a couple of times and the money was taken out twice - it takes about 2 weeks for your bank to sort it out !!!!

yup. they need to swap out the mechanism in the card reader for new ones imo.

considering you need to remove the card to collect your cash, what happens if your card does get stuck in transaction? Could turn into a bit of a situation.

Think thats bad... My friend was in the airport in Thailand. Proceeded to put his credit card in the ATM (one of those offsite ones) and the damm thing sucked it up. 20 minutes later it spitted back out. He was sweating hard for those 20 mins......

Every ATM's a right old bastard. Here is the conversation an ATM and I had.

ATM: What transaction would you like to make.
    ME: Cash withdrawal
ATM: K, how much do you want? You can take out €10, €20, €40, €60 or a specified multiple of 20.
    ME: €10
ATM: Oh we don't have any of those!
ME: But you-hmm..OK, I'll just take out €20 for the week.
ATM: K, just give me a sec and...oh lol, don't have any of those either.
    ME: Fine €40 then!
    ATM: Think larger.
    ME: €60 then.
    ATM: Nope.
ME: Well **** you I'm using the one downtown!

So I head down to the other ATM and he says the same thing. I decided I might as well take out everything. You know what the cheeky son of a branch does? He gives me €80 made up of a €50 note, a €20 note and that god damn €10 I wanted the whole time.

I swear they're out to get me.

  • Moderators, Music Moderators Posts: 35,945 Mod ✭✭✭✭dr.bollocko

Because what in the hell are you gonna do with ten euro? Wipe your ass?

You, it's all your fault. You're in league with the ATMs aren't you!?

The non-bank atms are complete and utter S**e..Tesco celbridge one never working..Gala wasnt working either [although their phone lines were cut by robbers so i forgive them] then londis one also broke..its a disgrace..only one ive known to work is a centra one down the village..But whats it on the same street as???..yes the Bank

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,195 ✭✭✭Corruptedmorals

BOI in Trinity gives tenners to everyone. I like Ulster Bank ones because they give tenners too. In my shop, we had 3 AIB ones which was handy for bank balance but now they've been replaced by BOI. Apart from that, I don't like AIB because they force you to take €50's almost all of the time. I reply on the PTSB one on Stephens Green and the TCD BOI one. They're really fast.

Tried to use one in Northern Ireland last night that:

1: Didn't take Bank of Ireland Republic of Ireland cards, but went through the motions, printing me an 'unauthorised use' receipt
2: Didn't take Mastercards, telling me 'we cannot process your transaction at this time'

All this coupled with having the smallest screen in the world - about 4 inches across - it wasn't a pleasant experience. Less pleasant was walking around Banbridge looking for another, though!

These 'non bank' ones in Ireland are always operated by banks... generally Ulster Bank ("Easycash").

What really annoys me is most ATMs wait until you choose how much you want before they say they dont have 10's or 20's or whatever. Why the hell cant they just fade out the options on the screen for the amounts they dont have the notes for?

I remember the time before there were ATMs. trying to get cash was a nightmare, begging shops and pubs to cash cheques!
One thing i have noticed in recent time is how bad Ulster bank have become. There was a time they had a decent standard of service. I think it is time to go back to the Post Office.
