Connecting to Media Servers with PS3 to access Pictures etc

    My mate just showed me how is is connecting from his PS3 to his laptop over the air to access all his photos, videos and MP3s.

    This blew me away. I seems to take about 5-10mins to make the connection but then it is all very easy. I had hit the connect to media server option a few times in the past but honestly didnt know what to expect. I tried again last night but did not pick up my laptop.

    How many other people are using PS3 for this? this seems to be an underutilised feature. I am using both laptop and PS3 wirelessly, connecting to my Netopia wireless router which is plugged into my Eircom fixed BB connection.

    Can someone help me troubleshoot this so that i can access my collection of family pictures and music thru my PS3?

    You need something like either Windows Media Player 11 or Nero Media Centre(?).

    Personally I use WMP11, go to Tools and select Shaing I think. You can set it so that your library is then shared. Then, leave WMP11 running on your PC and try connecting to the media server on the PS3. It should pick it up.

    Or google TVersity, another good application.

    Thanks a lot. will try that tonight. I am running Vista so i assume this all works the same - is there anything i need to do with the firewall?

    I use WMP11 to share my media but when I'm looking at photos it keeps locking up, usually lasts about 10 - 15 mins of browsing photos then locks up, I need to reset the PS3 before it works again, anyone else have this problem.

    I haven't really looked at movies or listened to music this way so can't tell if it happens with this too

    TVersity ftw!

    If you are having issues, use TVersity. It really is very easy to use. I do not know enough about the whole media sharing thing in WMP11, firewall effects and PS£ server connections to advise anything else.

    that link should give you all the info you need to setup Tversity media server, I have it setup for my laptop and works great watch tv shows and movies stored on my laptop, mp3 and pic work fine as well,
