How much should you spend, is it 4 and half times your monthly wage?

You spend what you can afford ... forget this whole 4 and a half times monthly salary crap.. im female , engaged and would never expect my partner to spend that much ... its about wanting to spend the rest of your life with someone not about how much the ring costs ...

Don't be daft. Of course its all about the ring!!

    Ummmmm.................maybe thats why I'm not engaged:D

No seriously, the idea of getting something that is several times salary is long gone out the window I think. More important to get something she really likes. Many girls have an idea of exactly what they want in an engagement ring. Just because you spend a certain amount doesn't necessarily mean she'll love it. Maybe bring her ring shopping with you? And spend whatever you can afford. Just remember there'll be a wedding to pay for aswell!

i agree , get her something she will like ... i know girls who like big rings and i know girls who like more simpler rings...

Four and a half months salary!? FOUR AND A HALF months salary!? Are you serious?

I have never heard that… is that gross or net…?

You do realise that is you have a not-huge-buying-a-house-will-be-tough salary of 25K, and it’s gross, then you would spend 9,375 on the ring?

    If your salary is pretty-good-but-I’m-not-in-the-same-league-as-that-ryanair-guy, let’s say 37K, that’s 13,875.

I could do this all day but it’s probably more constructive to advise you to go and have a look at what’s in the windows of jewellers. The majority of rings, even those in expensive jewellers, are under 13,875. And there are a HUGE number of rings under 9375. Reality is, most people won’t designate amounts like 10K to a ring. I would say that the vast number of people would be hard pushed to spend over 5K.

Don't be ridiculous. Goddammit, don't be so ridiculous. Putting a number (or even worse yet, an algorithim) on how much you should spend on an engagement ring is SOOOOO far from the point, it's not even funny.

You should spend whatever the right ring costs. If it happens to be €10,000 and you can afford it, spend €10,000. If it's €50 and it's the right ring, then spend €50.

I got my perfect ring, it's so ideal . Very similar to the first ring he ever bought me years ago (only with diamond) and it was nowhere near 4.5 months wage. At all. It's all about the thought and I know a lot of thought went into choosing it.
