So in America they have this program called the Federal Flight Deck Officer program and authorized members can carry a weopon on planes to counter terrorism and the like:)

Anyway a pilots gun was accidently discharged during a landing in Nrth. Carolina.

    BBC
    Wired

We should have something like this, if for nothing else, it will make us look cool:D:D

There was an old fat guy from Brooklyn who ranted about weapons on planes. His suggestion was to give every passenger a baseball bat and don't allow anyone at all to have a gun. There would be an increase in minor injuries but a reduction in deaths and hijackings. :D

I won't link to it cos of possible racism but it's easy to find.

Could thery not use rubber bullets or something similar that would not puncture the skin of the aircraft. If this had been higher it could have easily brought down the aircraft.

Didn't they do this on Mythbusters a while back and it showed that a bullet going through the skin or window of a plane at altitude was not going to bring it down?

Cool... can you also use the baseball bat on people who insist on reclining their chair all the way back on a short haul flight?

Thats one hell of a weapon for a pilot.

The pic is taking the piss tbh. But what do really have is a .40 HK USP, the same hund gun used by the Defence Forces but the pilots in the US have a version that fires the more powerful .40 cal round, less likely to over penetrate than the 9mm while at the same time dumping more energy on the target.

The cockpits of commercial airliners are cramped enough as it is....if you're going to bring a Barrett .50 cal (5 foot long) on for 'self defence', of course you're going to have an accident, he probably had it crammed down the footwell and the trigger got bashed off the clutch or something...

    Typical Americans, they so stupid..

Looking at the pictures on the BBC site, the round went right through the fuselage.

As has been said a bullet hole in a plane won't bring it down.

    No, I've seen it though.

Honestly, how do you end up firing a gun in the cockpit? Would it be necessary for any pilot to have the gun near them? I thought the cockpit door is typically locked, (esp after 9/11) so if there was trouble there would be plenty of time to take the gun out of some sort of safe compartment, (like the glove box:D). Still, even if that wasn't the case, which seems likely, shouldn't the chamber be empty with the safety on? End of the day, the pilot's a ******* moron.

As far as I know the gun is locked in a compartment within the cockpit. I read up on the type of gun carried and it seems that it's almost impossible for this type of gun to go off accidently, so it's not looking so good for the pilot. Still though it's all just speculation at the moment as it hasn't been mentioned anywhere what really happened.

I was sort of thinking the same, he was probably playing with the gun at the time... plenty of accidental gun deaths in US(and elsewhere) every year

I looked at the thread title and thought it was going to be about some type of Mile High style antics!

    Disappointed now. :(

There is very rarely a way for a firearm to go off 'on its own'. On very rare occasions a mechanical malfunction can result in an AD, but 90% of the time this sort of thing is a result of mishandling by the operator. The pilot would need a very convincing explanation of what happened to avoid any blame for this one.

All in all, though, I've no issue with the pilots being armed. Most are former air force anyway, and they -all- have the power of life or death over everyone inside even without a firearm: Witness EgyptAir 990.

It is kind of unnerving to think that this could possibly happen but I've a horrible feeling that it's the case. Not looking good for the pilot at all!

It probably wouldn't bring it down, but the plane wouldn't be able to continue for long, without landing quickly...I would think.

I would like to see that episode.....they did a good one of getting out of a submerged car...
