Audio problem on laptop.

A lesser tech-savvy friends of mine has a problem with his Dell Inspiron 1300.

Since he turned on his laptop this morning the sound from the built in speakers has been bad.

"like when ur tuning the radio into a station"

That is how he put it.

I got him to check the earphone jack, and there is no problem with that one.

The problem is only with the built in speakers.

I take it the only solution here is that it will have to opened and the audio connection to the motherboard be checked.

He is in Toulouse and he won't do it himself, and he would rather wait to get home in a month and sort it then, rather than mess with it.

Is there any other possible simple solution to it rather than have to open it up?

I realise opening it isnt a huge operation but to him it is rather more daunting!

download a driver update for it, if there is one.

    might fix it.

    sometimes things just go bad.

also, go into device manager and see if there is a hardware conflict.
it will be in the properties tab in device manager.

(if your running windows that is.)

    oh

    also,
ask him to check if he left the onboard mic turned on along with mic boost. sometimes that pcs up the noise of the fan and hdd and it really makes noise!

Some Dell laptops are known to have problems with audio noise. I'm not sure if this is one of the models...

    Windows Vista by any chance?

I had a similar problem with my 2nd sound card when I upgraded (:o) to Vista. Thought it was shagged until I went back to XP and it started working perfectly again. No change to hardware setup whatsoever.

I don't know how its even possible for the OS to screw something like this up, but its been achieved.

Try booting the laptop off a Ubuntu CD or something to test it.

Not Vista. He hasnt changed anything, to his knowledge. Hasn't messed with audio properties, nothin.

He would never have heard of Ubuntu either. I'm having him download the latest drivers for it now.

He has never updated any drivers since he bought it a few years ago.

We'll see how he gets on then...
