Hello! I am going to Edinburgh with my girlfriend this weekend and would appreciate if you could give me some tips on places to visit, etc. We were also thinking about renting a car, however we are not sure whether that would be useful or not….is there anything interesting to see around Edinburgh?

Also would you know if there is a direct bus/train from Prestwick airport to Edinburgh or should we go via Glasgow?

Thank you in advance for your advices! J

There is plenty in Edinburgh to fill a weekend, but what you do depends on your own tastes. There's the castle, Holyroodhouse Palace, plenty of nice bars and restaurants, a good art gallery, nice neighbourhoods to explore (rough ones, too, but I suppose you would prefer to avoid them), interesting buildings, shopping on Princes Street, etc. Use the open-top bus tour to get an overview, and then choose what you would like to spend your time on.

From Prestwick there is a frequent train service into Glasgow Central, and from Glasgow Central there are frequent trains to Edinburgh. Easy.

The museum there is really top notch. I could have spent days in it! I also wanted to do the castle tour - but didn't get there on time.

I also recommend doing the open top bus tour first. Make sure to sit near to the guide. Otherwise you might struggle to hear him speak.

The World Cross Country championships are on in Edinburgh this weekend. If you've any interest in sport, it's quite a big event. Kenenisa Bekele will be running in the mens race. There'll be Irish competitors in each race too, Fionnuala Britton is likely to be our highest finisher.

Its not as interesting a city a city was 10 years ago nightlife-wise unfortunately, but there are still plenty good pubs worth a visit. Avoid George Street like the plague, head down to Leith and drop in to the Port o'Leith Bar on Constitution Street.

I wonder if by any chance you know if there is a direct train/bus from Prestwick Airport to Edinburgh or we need to go via Glasgow? Thank you again for your help :)

Beautiful City, Bring lots of warm clothes, its very cold there.

Visit the Castle, Camera Obsuraca which is beside Castle, Edinburgh Dungeons, Shopping on Princes Street.

Cant think of restaurants, we couldnt find many when we visited so we usually ate in Hotel. I remember seeing alot of chinese, italian restaurants.. We ate in Pizza Hut one night. Also, alot of Cafes and sandwich/panini bars around. There was one nice restaurant we found on the day we were leaving, it was on a street of Princes street and was nice.

    Have a good time! :D
