So here it is...I have acquired a HP Laserjet 4100TN with a inbult Ethernet port. I am using a Netopia broadband router. Can I just use an RJ45 connection on the printer and plug it into a spare port on the router. Then use this as a network printer. Am using XP. I have tried but I won't print and I think I have the correct drivers installed.....Any tips boardies????

Not to be a smartar$e, have you checked HP's documentation?

I would start by making sure that your network config is correct, can you ping the printer?

just to add to Souper's post.

Everything on a network must have an address (IP Address) and an area code (Subnet Mask)
Generally the Subnet mask for a private network is 255.255.255.0 and the IP Addresses usually take on the format 192.168.1.XX where xx can be a number between 1 and 254 (Generally 1 or 254 are taken up by the routers so best stick to a middle number)

Print the printer configuration, (there's menu buttons on the front) and see what IP address the printer has. The first 3 sections of the ip address should be the same as on your computer.

i.e. Computer 192.168.1.XX and Printer 192.168.1.XY with the subnet on both of 255.255.255.0

Yeah.... I have checked the HP Website, its not very forthcoming. The IP address I have and was unable to ping it. I did read something about using telnet to connect to it. HP also has a Web-utility, but it requires XP Pro. But as I can't ping the printer, telnet wont work. Might try defaulting the printer then. Just to check. I should be able to use the printer as a network printer using the Eircom Netopia Router??. Also one PC is XP and the other Win2000. Should that make any difference to enable maping to the HP
