The l96 is pretty good...but I'd go with a G36K or the dragunov.
Though you need to convey to him that with a 1 J limit sniper ''spring'' rifles are pretty redundant.

    Uh-huh.

Tell tha to oour resident snipers Cheeky Monkey and Liamo. They've made a pretty good career out of sniping. Airsoft isn't counter strike, sniping isn't all about range.

he had to get the irish dpm scar in (best looking scar on the planet)
money no object you say ,

if he is partial to a sniper but wants an aeg ,id say go with the CA/SL8 ,

    or CA SPR

that way he gets a bit of both , excellent looking pieces of kit with the preformance and upgrades to match,

the problem with the psg-1 is it's bloody expensive and could do with a few upgrades out of the box

if he wants a sniper and has plenty of money, i'd go for the l96 or a vsr g-spec

Yeah, GSPEC with 1J Upgrade should fit those parameters.

The SL8 hands down, it's not a great sniper, deffinatly not good for CQB, but it can double as a support (with a C mag) or assault with a standard G36 mag. The problem is everyone likes the idea of sniping. But it takes a particular kind of gamer to either enjoy, or be any good at it.

Most don't have the patience. As a starter its better to get a sniper rifle that can do all three so that if the shine wears off, at least the money hasn't been wasted.

I agree, it takes a special kind of patience to spend a game sneaking about, getting into a good spot, and only taking a couple of well aimed shots. While the idea is appealing to a lot of people when they first start out at airsoft it often doesn't work out the way they think it will. At least if he gets something will full auto capability then he can try a more hands on assault role, or even a squad marksman role, which sort of bridges the gap between up close and personal and sneaking around in the bushes. I'd recommend an SL8 if he's got a large budget, or an M14 if money is a bit tighter. Both have excellent range, the option of full auto and good accuracy.

You can swap out that rail with a G36C as far as I know, which will get you a rail and a lower profile on top; I'm sure someone would be happy to trade to get that sight. I'm thinking of doing that myself after I've tested the built-in sight some more. Not an awful lot wrong with it.

    G-spec always

Having fired most of what's mentioned above at some stage over the last year, your two best options are mentioned already:

    Sniper: G-Spec, everytime.

General purpose long-rifle: TM M14 (which can double as a marksmans rifle should he wish too).

The G-Spec is the best sniper rifle available. The TM M14 is highly regarded in airsoft as being one of the most accurate and long range aeg available and can double as a marksman rifle with the addition of a reasonable scope. Either way you can't lose.

Nope. Pick up the C-series carry handle, and mount a scope to it. But to begin with you have a good enough sniper/support/marksman/assault AEG right out of the box.
There aren't a whole lot of guns out there that can do that.
