This is perhaps the wrong night to post this and I will probably get stick...

But I have been listening to Sky hype up Ronaldo all night and I can't handle it anymore. Jamie Redknapp just said that he is up there with Tiger Woods!! I know... I know... Sky nonsense.

But how many people share that view?

Is Ronaldo the best player in the world?

Right I am a Utd fan and I love Ronaldo... I think he is great. But I am still waiting to see him do something amazing in a big match. I think he is probably the player that you would most want against the likes of Bolton and Derby. But surely he has to do it against the likes of Liverpool, Arsenal and Chelsea as well as in the really big games in Europe to warrant the attention that he is receiving??

Currently the best in the world.

But Jamie Redknapp is a joke, as if he is best mates with Ronaldo and he is better than Pele and Maradona put together, always OTT with Redknapp.

Apologies I didnt realise that there was a similar thread already open.. Feel free mods to put this in that thread.

besides the obvious goals (largely against lower ranked teams) what makes you think he is the best out there? If you look at big match performances he seems to be fairly down the pecking order. I cant remember any big game that he has bossed.

the fact that i would rather anybody in the world with the possible exception of Messi (who he is less injury prone than) to line up against my team, makes me rate him as the best in the world. he just broke George Bests record ffs

I'm not at all saying that I don't admire it. I am a Utd fan... I have no chip against Ronaldo.

I just think that ppl are going way overboard. I would love nothing more than for Ronaldo to turn it on against Liverpool on Sunday. But everytime Utd go into a big game with a quality team I go in expecting Ronaldo to show his quality and it just hasn't happened yet. Besides maybe a cross last year against Liverpool and a good display against a Roma side that capitulated at old Trafford I cant really remember too much from Ronaldo against the big teams

Surely to be the best player in the world you have to show more than scoring lots of goals against poor opposition.

every game for united is a big game. and he was superb in the CL last year and this year so far, these are all big games. he is top scorer, this in the CL and in England. we are not talking about league cup ere mate, we are talking prem, fa cup and cl. in the so called "big games", he is normally doubly marked. its very rare that the main players stand out in these big games, its normally the lesser players. he ha also been man of the match in 3 games against arsenal and once against liverpool. nobody remembers them do they? he is a winger, people judge him on his scoring in the big games. and he has 3 goals against arsenal, all away from home.

    example -
gerrard has not scored against united in 6 or 7 years.
the likes of lampard and drogba have only 2 goals between them against united.
fabregas has only scored once against united.
torres was non existent when united played liverpool.
i could go on and on, the only "big player" that played really well last year in the "big games" was kaka V united.

ronaldo is currently the best player in the world. that is fact. he tonight broke a 30 year old record, held by George Best. that says alot. Best is one of the best talents ever to grace the english game. Ronaldo will, if he stays at united for another 3 or 4 years, be ranked up there, maybe some people will say he already is.

anyway, why another ronaldo thread, there seems to be one now every week!

like I said I didnt realise there was another thread... I have already apologised.

when was ronaldo man of the match against arsenal and liverpool? which games... because i have seen them all and I dont have any memory of that!

So do you all think that because Ronaldo has broken George Best's record that he is as good as George Best?

You know nobody has to read or post in this thread if they don't want to! It is clearly marked what it is about.

If you dont want to read another thread about Ronaldo it might be a good idea not to click on threads entitled Cristiano Ronaldo.

Which George Best record did he break?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 11,985 ✭✭✭✭zAbbo

    It's total rubbish from Redknapp, I mean we've never even seen C.Ronaldo play a back 9. ;)

His record of scoring 32 games as a winger. Ronaldo scored his 33rd tonight.

He's in outstanding form but I'm not quite sure if I'd call him the best player in the world just yet. I agree he has to do it on the big stage. I dont feel he has accomplished this as yet.
every game for united is a big game. and he was superb in the CL last year and this year so far, these are all big games.

Not against Milan he wasn't. Gattuso had him in his pocket. I am a big admirer of Ronaldo but this is a fact. Has Ronaldo improved since last season? I would say hell yes but we've got to see if he can do it when the big tests occur.

George Best helped United to a European Cup. I want to see Ronaldo do the same.

Ronaldo deserves huge credit and is in my opinion one of the best players in the world but he has to do his stuff on the major occasions to be considered the best player on the planet.

Let's see if he does so. I hope he will.

Are you making a point there or is it some half arsed attempt at a joke?

What has Fernandes got to do with the 20 odd threads on Ronaldo? But hey if you wanna start one on Gelson by all means go for it.

Not clicking on Ronaldo threads or Gelson threads or Fahey threads seems to make sense to me if you dont want to read them.

if there too many they will be merged.

well if you cant remember, then it obviously didnt happen . research your posts in future please. highbury 4-2,fa cup final, 2-0 at old trafford, his first game v liverpool (hit post for like 35 yards out in that game)

as for the second questions, i think yes, he can be as good as best and better. nothing to do with goals, but overall play. ronaldo has everything.

pace, height, lethal with both feet, penalties, free kicks, lethal in the box, brilliant in the air. he is the ultimate footballer.

    now, please close thread!!!

Tbh the title of 'Cristiano Ronaldo' was a little vague so I clicked on thinking that there was a bug story coming out of tonight's game. There wasn't, it's just the same as what goes on in every other thread.

hold on a sec homer?! ultimeate footballer?

did i miss something when they removed tackles, tracking back etc were removed from the game?

Best player in the world at the minute-most definately, but lets not pretend that he is a "complete footballer" by any means.

Its not threads about Ronaldo I've a problem with. I opened the thread thinking there might be something interesting inside. Not the same rant about how he hasn't done it against the big sides. The debate was interesting the first time or 2.

+1 This was all done to death a week ago. Seriosuly, I don't see what's wrong with a merge.

Ok lets go through those games:

    1. highbury 4-2... are you on crack??? that was the roy keane/ viera tunnel game... there was only one man that was man of the match and that was roy keane. ronaldo may have scored twice but he was never man of the match

    2. fa cup final 2005... For sure Ronaldo was good but I think Rooney was probably better. Plus Utd still lost (by penalties admittedly) hardly a dominatiing man of the match display by ronaldo. it was a pretty poor game as I remember

    3. 2-0 at Old Trafford. You must be getting mixed up with Rooney who was man of the match. In fact I just went back and read the match report for that game and there is not a single mention of Cristiano Ronaldo.

    4. ronaldos first game against liverpool... he may have hit the post from 35 yards but that does not make him man of the match!

tbh maybe you should do some research!
