Do you have a Nokia car kit installed in the car by any chance? If so get a phone that fits the cradle & just slot it in, it might just reset the mute status on the radio. Failing that plug out the car kit, if you can find the control unit (black box).

Radios have a wire built in for future connection to phone kits for muting the radio. I think all that the phone kit does is give it an earth when a call comes in. So if this wire happens to earth on a part of your car whether a car kit is installed or not you will get phone showing on the radio. Pull out radio and find this unused wire. It is probably toucing on something.
