ok so today my "L" and "up arrow" fell off. also several other buttons dont "feel" right anymore. the laptop is about two years old now and i managed to clip most of the buttons back on by simply pushing. Now, my up arrow is broke off completly, where can I go about getting this repaired fast? I need my laptop on a daily basis so where can i go that can have it fixed in a day??

You just need a replacement laptop keyboard for your make of laptop. You could order one on e-bay, or take it to some sort of repair centre. Its actually quite easy to swap out, one little connection into the laptops mobo, I have done it a few times with work. Unfortunately though, as it was always through work I have no idea of the pricing but I would imagine it cant cost that much.
Just use a USB keyboard until you get it swapped out.

well the keys are functioning but what do you think could be causing this? i had my "H" key fall off before. is it a common thing? I had a PC before this for years and years still used the same old cr*ppy keyboard. but it stayed in one piece...

It may be fine. The scissor clip (looks kinda like a see-saw) that holds the key in place may have fallen off. If you still have it then you should be able to clip it back on. If not the manufacturer may send them out for free.

it is that type looks more like an X when opened out. this is how most fitted but the up arrow key is damaged (the scissors clip) because i went too rough. so i should just ring up fujitsu siemens and see if they can help?

Its just wear and tear. Think about how many times the desktop keyboard has even been moved from its desksdie perch, then the amount of times you have banged around the laptop. Its common enough to replace a laptop keyboard during the laptop's lifetime and is fairly simple to clip in / clip out. Of course you could go through all the keys that dont "feel" right anymore and see if you can just fix them individually too and save a bit of cash.

    what is the desktop perch?

em i suppose so. anyway i'll give them a bell tomorrow. i'd rather not need to replace the entire keyboard. is there a specific way to re-insert the keys? because all i ever done was push hard with my thumb untill they clicked into place..

Jaysus I dunno. I presume that there is. I have only ever replaced the whole keyboard. The usual, because I was doing it for a job that had an agreement with Dell that meant we just rang them asking for whatever the hell we thought we needed to fix the problem, so the cheapness factor never really got investigated. In the event that a button breaks, i would presume that there is a method of clipping in a replacement. I have just taken the keybord off before and cleaned it when some buttons became unresponsive if that is your issue.

That's the one all right. If it's broken ring them up and ask can they send you out a few. Hopefully they send it out without charging.

    Hi folks,

Just recycling this old thread rather than start a new one.

I've a Dell laptop, and managed to spill a small bit of ketcup on one of the keys while having lunch at my desk recently.

Now, I wiped what I could out at the time, but it still was a little bit sticky. I may have been a little too firm while trying to get them to work afterwards, but then the key stopped working. This was followed by the spacebar and a couple of other random keys not in the same area.

I need to get this fixed obviously. I realise this may be difficult to diagnose, but is this issue likely to be resolved by simply replacing the keyboard, or could this be a motherboard issue? I'm holding off contacting one of the repair companies as I'm afraid they'll exaggerate the problem.

Thanks in advance for your help.
