Curious to see what folks would do in this double barrel situation.

Basically, friend A (let's call her Penelope) wanted a laptop but is Spanish, hasn't got a clue about laptops etc etc, so I told her I'd pick her a suitable one and get her a good deal on it through a friend of a friend of a friend. She doesn't have a credit card so in comes friend B (let's call him Fabrizio) who provides credit card and his name goes on the order.

Laptop arrives all is ok then a few days later, a 2nd laptop arrives:eek: Fabrizio can't check his credit card to see if he's been charged or not and will have to wait 2 months for the statement to arrive so he can check. For all we know, we got a 2nd laptop for free. So there's a few options to take here.

Be honest and get back onto the salesperson and tell them we got a 2nd laptop.

Stay quiet, wait for statement, if no charge keep it, if there is a charge, get back onto salesperson who will then know we tried to chance our arm to see if there was no charge, even though we obviously knew we didn't order a 2nd laptop when we took delivery of it.

Then comes the 2nd dellemma, if the laptop isn't charged, or if we did the honest option above, but they just never showed up to collect after months and months (which I've heard has happened quite a bit with the computer company in question) who keeps it? Me, who did all the work choosing and ordering it, Fabrizio, who provided the credit card and who the order was actually in the name of, or Penelope who just said "can you find me a laptop for this price", but who there would be no 2nd laptop if it wasn't for, because an order wouldn't have been made in the first place. Or do you sell it and split the cash three ways?
I told the salesperson and it was collected and returned. He told me the credit card was actually charged too

Don't be a nerd - keep it if there's no charge.

If you get charged twice, it doesn't matter what the sales rep thinks if you try to return it - say it only just arrived.

Keep it yourself & tell your mates you sent it back.

    Problem solved. You're welcome.

It was delivered to Fabrizio, and Fabrizio and Penelope live right next door to me. Also, the computer and delivery company would have a record of when it was delivered.

Did someone have to physically SIGN for both laptops when delivered? If so you will be getting a call from them soon enough I should imagine.

There's no moral dilemma here. The only right thing to do is the return the second laptop, regardless of whether you were charged for it or not.

And since you got the deal through a chain of friends, if the friend at the end of the chain finds out you're pulling a fast one then it might well come back to bite you.

Just give the 2nd laptop back.

It's done and dusted now by the way, check the spoiler tag in the original post for what I did :P Just want to see what others would do.

    Id give it back too.

Along with a nasty complaint for charging me twice!

There is no moral dilemma - everyone knows what the right thing to do is.
It's just that some people will try to get away with things.

What you mean is: Can I keep it without getting into trouble? Not Should I keep it?

What keeps us from doing the right thing here. Fear or morals?

Everything I don't like is either woke or fascist - possibly both - pick one.

Indeedy.... You're basically looking for permission to steal a laptop.

Give it back. The company will have 2 PoDs anyway so they'll come knocking sooner or later.

If nothing else think about the poor idiot in his/her low paid job who is potentially getting into **** for sending out a 2nd laptop. Tis the right thing to do.

EDIT: Sigh... just read the spoiler... Free stuff doesn't usually fall through the letter box eh?

I ordered a computer years ago (a 100Mhz Pentium!), and got two delivered within a day of each other, after complaining about the delay in shipping.

Sold the second one to pay for the first. Happy days. Both PCS are still humming away somewhere.

Good on you Cormie - if you're honest then there's nothing going to come back and bite you in the future. And you have to live with yourself.
Imagine how you'd have felt when the credit card came in if you'd kept it :o

Could ya not just ring the credit card company rather than waiting 2months for a statement??

Nope, Fabrizio's card is actually his brothers, he's just a named user of it and both him and his brother are useless when it comes to anything like ringing up somewhere:rolleyes:

Be honest and get back onto the salesperson and tell them we got a 2nd laptop

Honesty is a very important standard to me.

I wouldnt keep the second one - or even be tempted.

I don't see why you thought you had a right to the hot laptop. I would have left the decision up to Fabrizio.

Or you could take both laptops, sell them and then use the money to move to Mexico and live like a king.

Where did I say that? I was the one who got back onto the salesperson to tell them they sent a second one.

Snyper, same with me, I wouldn't trade my honesty for a laptop ;)

I would think though, that if the salesperson said we could keep it (if it wasn't worth their while to collect it etc) or if they didn't collect it for 6 months, which I think there is a law that states if after 6 months no effort had been made to collect it from the company after they've been notified, that the customer can keep it. That the laptop should be sold and split 3 ways. Fairest option, none of us have any more right to the free laptop than the other.

That's not be saying I think I have the right to it sunshine. I'm asking opinions on what people think. As I said, I think the fairest thing had we ended up getting to keep it by honesty and lack of bother by the company, would be to sell it and split it 3 ways since there were 3 of us involved.
