Not bad, especially from where you were seated and the lens you had.

Good shots, #7 in particular. Sports photography is very difficult, at least it is for me!

Some good photos there, 1 (Wallace's ankle tap) and 9 (Mushy on a charge) are the two that stand out for me - well done.

I really like 5,7,11,13. Some nice shots there.

Yeah, sports photography isn't easy, it takes practice and skill. All you can do is keep trying.

    Keep up the good work.

    Thanks paul,
Sports photography can be vey hard when you start out,but it gradually gets easier!you start to get to know speed of the players and how they'll move

    I will keep trying :D

Actually it's Paddy Wallace, I think he played at 12 last night but also plays 10 for Ulster and Ireland (sometimes).

    What gear did you use?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 24,968 ✭✭✭✭phog

#1 Kieran Lewis (M) and Paddy Wallace (U)
#2 Paul O'Connell (M) - can't really see the Ulster player but would be one of the forwards.
#3 Doug Howlett (M) chased by Bryn Cunningham (U)
#4 No8 is Stephen Ferris (U) I'd guess holding Donncha O'Callaghan (M) the guy with the jersey over his head is posibly Tom Court ( he was sin binned for the bad tackle on Mafi)
#5 Mick O'Driscoll (M) in the air the lifters are possibly Marcus Horan and Tony Buckley (M), the Ulster guys are Justin Harrison and Justin Fitspatrick ( I think)
#6 Ronan O'Gara (M) kicking and Howlett out of focus
    #7 Doug Howlett (M)
    #8 ROG (M)
#9 Tony Bickley (M) followed by Lifeimi Mafi (M)- not sure of the Ulster player but I think it may be Mark Bartholomeusz
#10 Peter Stringer (M) passing the ball, James Coughlan (M) behind him and Paddy Wallace for Ulster
    #11 Paddy Wallace (U) tackled by Paul O'Connell (M)
#12 The guy pointing to his face is Justin Harrison (U), Isaac Boss (U) is wedged between him and No.17 (Bryan Young) (U). Paul O'Connell is in there (jersy being pulled) Alan Quinlan (M) (Quinny on his scrum cap) is at Harrison's left side and Donnacha Ryan (black scrum cap) is in front of POC, not sure of the reaminder of the players, James Coughlan is possibly there.
    #13 - Paul O'Connell

This link has match details including the line ups for both teams so if you have other pics with the jersey numbers available you might be able to get the players names.

From these online examples, the quality of most of the images are terrible due to the noise. What camera were you using?

    1. Good, but with motion blur.
    2. Too tight a crop.
    3. Good, bad noise though.
    4. Strange.
    5. Good, but tigher crop would have worked better.
    6. Too tight a crop and foreground is distracting.
    7. Part-subject (ball) is too close to the border. What f-number are you using here?
    8. Grand (noise aside)
    9. Grand.
    10. See 7.
    11. Crop too tight.
    12. Crop too tight/crop too loose, take your pick.
    13. Accident? ;)

    Anybody disagree?

The noise in those images is perfectly acceptable, especially if they were to be printed.

With floodlit games like that, noise is unavoidable.

Actually Shakey I think you'l find that if you look at oriels flickr he is one of the greatest photographers to come out this country in the past number of years...and no this is not sarcasm..............I SWEAR!

But back Rickys shots, and we really seem to have gone off the point here as usual, my two cents is I think they look good. Noise doesn't look bad at all from what I can see, and considering the lighting wasn't going to be that good. What ISO did you use Ricky? I think the exposures came out well.
Thanks all havent commented here last two days as broadband was down!
I was shooting as iso 1600 which as you can see is not the best on a 20D...

@ Oriel:I could'nt help but have noise it was either that or i come home with 200 odd photos that are all blury or under exposed so im pleased with the results

One last thing im putting a few more pics up Found some good ones(imo)so i might post a few soon

    @Phog :Thanks for that,you're a great help

@ Paul:Yup i was pleased with the noise is some of the pictures but most of them have a good bit of noise :(

    @ Dodgykeeper: Thanks for that

I'd post up a few of mine for comparison only for the club said I can't publish any photos because they want them for website and programme use.

That must be a nice one. Exclusive rights to use your photo. A few hundred euro for that. That'll pay for a new lens or body.

The 1D MKIII is currently being saved for. Had the privilege of using one for a few minutes last night at the U19's International and will be using it tomorrow night and I instantly wanted it.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 13,381 ✭✭✭✭Paulw

Even the 1D MkIII will be common here in no time.

I know 2 other boards members with them.

It is a brilliant camera and a joy to use. Full of functions and features. Well worth saving for.

Now that the rugby season is near an end, I'll just move over and start doing LOI football. Might even throw in a few GAA games while I'm at it too.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 9,200 ✭✭✭kensutz

Can get it for about €2500-€2600. The funds are saved just a matter of getting it out of the bank or transfer to Albert.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 13,381 ✭✭✭✭Paulw

Brilliant price indeed, especially with the way the exchange rates are.

I can't see myself spending that much on camera gear this year, thankfully, unless I get rich or something. Then I might get a 500mm f/4 lens. Otherwise, I'll just have to manage with what I already have.
