As an art form, not mindless vandelism.

I'm 17 and a graffiti artist myself, and I see myself as an artist of sorts and not a "teen vandel" which i have been labeled.

I have given up ilegal graffiti and now only paint on legal walls, and am involved in trying to erect more legal walls around dublin and sorounding area's, as i feel this will help bring people away from the ilegal graffiti scene and also, bring kids off the streets, as has been done with such projects as the fettercairn horse stables in west tallaght.

I would like opinions on the topic, either for or against graffiti, from all ages, children, teens to adults.

    Thank you! =]

Some legal pieces are amaing, especially the one's Maser does, there's a few on Richmond Rd in Portebello and then another one or two near Harcourt St.

I dont think you will ever remove he illegal scene as it is the heart of graf. Although should be left to professionals. Aspiring kids should should be given a space like Germany and the likes. Turn the problem into something productive.

Isn't there a big place in Drogheda that has been quite well received for legal graffiti?

The amount of graffiti that is suddenly appearing is very worrying, Have a look at the green line of the luas and how the line has been destroyed. I am afraid I don't see it as an art form but vandalism especially when the young kids are now creeping onto the motorways to try their hand, which is certainly not art.

Your best bet is probably skateparks or places where extreme sports are played. I do a bit of grafitti (not very good though - can never get a nice neat outline!) using a standard airbrush on watercolour paper and, if working big, on bedsheets (not ideal though 0 paint tends to run)

I think you also need to differentiate yourself from the assholes that just paint their initials on walls.

    I presume you're familiar with kingsofconcrete.com...?

Everything I don't like is either woke or fascist - possibly both - pick one.

Really like skilled grafitti, if it's done right it can look really good. Unfortunately there is a lot of just doing initials or names (doesn't always look great).

Saw some in Paris last year, one was of Yoda - looked amazing!

Thanks for every bodies feedback! =]]

Zarkrze, could you explain why you dont think graffiti is an art form?
As far as i knew any thing creative can be classed as art, and graffiti is very creative.
    Are you familiar with banksy?
The world renowned graffiti artist who's canvas works start at about €7500? and belive me they go alot higher.

Here's a link where you can see pictures of some of the irish graffiti scene's greatest artists.

and bye the way, instead of using bed sheets, get a board of ply wood, a big one, and reuse it like!
or if you want to keep them for show, all city records seel big canvas's you can use! =]

    link to their website. http://shop.all-cityrecords.com/index.asp
Their located in temple bar, dublin city

I seriously can't stand tagging, it's just like a competition to get your tag in the weirdest hard to reach place.

Graffiti at it's best is IMO illegal, and like all good art making a statement.

yes thats exactly what it is, to get up and get known, marking your teritory!

could you rephrase the second part?
    it didnt make sense

Yeah marking your teritory, cool. Graffiti is for benders, FACT. You call yourself an artist Cian but I'd imagine you only produce ****. Can you post some of your artwork for us to critique?

  • Moderators, Arts Moderators Posts: 17,231 Mod ✭✭✭✭Das Kitty

I meant that it's anti-establishment but kinda making a point (or being funny which is also good) rather that just putting your name on something so people will see it.

Everyone talks about Banksy but he's a blooming genius.

So how come people moan about dudes painting on someone elses property, then the same people give banksy props for his work. Even though his stuff is illegal too a lot of the time.

Ah, the philistines have arrived. Surprised it took you so long. I'm sure you'll waste no time in backing up your FACT with hard evidence, yes?

And I'm not entirely sure I value your credentials as a critic, given your opening statement. I'd be like listening to George Bush give an unbiased assessment of the war in Iraq.

The guy comes across as the usual talentless goon thinking the crap they produce is art. I just want to see his work. Most graffiti writers are douche bags, and I've probably known a good few more than you.

In what way does he as a "talentless goon"? I lot of art is crap, but that doesn't mean it's not art.

You may know more grafitti writers than I do, I'll take you word for it. Why do you hang out with them? How did you get to know them?

And why would someone want to show there work to someone who hates the genre? Let's face it, you mind is made up.

I said he comes across like like a talentless goon, it's easy to pick up in what he says. I never said I hung out with writers. A lot of writers I've met have been some of the most ignorant people I've ever met. Never said I hated the genre. Just don't like the stereotypical teenager "legal graffiti artist", it's art not mindless vandalism bs or the banksi wagon jumpers.

I read the OP and I'm afraid I missed it again! So, pleae enlighten, because I'm beginnig to think you chose saw the word "grafitti", CHOSE to assume he was a talentless goon and waded in.

And I'm finding it hard to find consistancy in the rest of your posts: the impression I got (perhaps incorrectly) was that your thoughts were based on more than a fleeting acquaintance and that you knew what you were talking about as apposed to going on aforementioned assumptions.

You say "Grafitti is for benders - FACT" (still waiting for the EVIDENCE)" and "a lot of the writers are the most ignorant people I ever met" but you don't hate the genre?

Time to stop beating around the bush my friend and tell us what you DO like in this field (if anything - if nothing, feel free, but you'll be contradicting yourself)

    FX Meister.

you can tell the quality of my work from the way i speak?
if you're refering to the fact that i cant spell, that's because im dyslexic, you utter ****.

And no i wont show you any of my work, posting pictures of my work with my name up would be just stupid, i havent always been a legal graffiti artist, but i have seen the errors of my ways and now only hit legal spots.

And i have to say you are quite rediculess yourself, "graffiti is for benders" yet you still say, "i have nothing against the genre".

please do us all a favore and leave the discussions to people who have the ability to be civilised and not go agro at any given chance.

And by the way, i only found out who banksy was afer i got intothe graffiti scene, and who are you to say im not "the next banksy".
you know nothing about me other than my name and age.
    people like you disgust me.

I've come across loads of teenage graffiti writers with the same outlook as you and most of them are terrible. So you've given up on illegal graffiti, that's great, you're doing the right thing. So did either of you go to the all city jam today? Full of absolute tossers and kids who's mum's buy their paint so they can scrawl their crap name on any surface they can without putting any thought behind it. The guys in drogheda, they are a great bunch to look up to. They paint their wall once a year, don't give a toss about anyone else. Dump their empty cans in the boyne when they're done. Why should I automatically hate the genre just because most writers and knob ends? Can I not listen to the Scissor sisters and like their music even though they are all fags and I don't like fags? Cian, you won't post your flicks because you haven't always been a legal artist, the cops aren't going to come looking for you here. FACT. They can't do much with writers they catch in the act let alone building a case on some toy who's posted his pictures on boards.ie. It couldn't stand up in court anyway. FACT

Ok. First up, PLEASE look up the meaning of the word "fact" in a dictionary. Then "opinion" and, if you've got a slang dictionary to hand "bull****".

Now. Were YOU at the all city Jam? Why?
    FX Meister wrote:

Pretty much a concrete judgement on your feelings of the genre, if you ask me (and don't tell me you were referring to grafitti artists and not the actual grafitti, because I won't beleive you - FACT)

no i wasnt at the jam today, i went skating instead, and iv heard stories about people gettin burrened by the gaurds for havin pics up of illeag work, they claim to of done themselves.

and so what about that ****in wall?
    yeah
its a legal wall, just like so many others around the city, iv had a good bit of work up there, and id be suprissed if you havent said something like "well thats a pretty nice one right there" when lookin at it.

im not the typical ****ty toy that goes writin on the walls for the sake of being like every one else, i do it because i love it, and i wont try ANYTHING with paint, untill im am fully happy with the way i can draw it on paper, and untill i am happy with the colours i use.

dont label, and dont be a waster.
thats the best advice your ever gonna get, remember it! =]

The All City Jam was chock block full of little runts. The only good part of the day was some nice varied pieces and the B-Boy Battle. The Limerick lad Mcing was good craic too. All in all a bit different and I was a young vandel myself. No pretense to being nice as a teen doing that kind of thing, but its a scene like any other.

Yeah, I was there, as you could tell from my previous post. I was there to hang out with some of the few writers that are actually sound. And yeah, they are gay too. FACT. I asked them if I could take pictures of them riding as proof but they said that they don't care about you so refused.
