Sorry, just have to get this off my chest!

Decided to trade up my 400D to a 40D - all happy with my (soon to arrive) purchase.

Have a buyer for the 400D already. Hunted around and plummed for the 7DayShop - good price, exchange rate to sterling is favourable - life is good so far.

Ordered it tuesday for £694 - body only - and with the cash back deal ongoing its pretty good.

Feckers sent me a marketing email today, they've slashed the price on the 40D to £628 just today - I couldnt believe it! What can you do I guess, these things happen but to anyone on the lookout thats a pretty good price.

I wrote them an an email innocently asking if I had been charged the wrong price cough cough but I have a feeling I can safely predict the reply.

Grrr - its taken the whole sweetness of the cash back deal away.

You might want to get more tissues, since you can get it for €685 on Kea from eBay (yes, euro...)

What he said. You should be able to send it back under the Cooling-off period in EU distance selling regulations if not the shop's own returns policy.

Really... thats interesting about the cooling off idea - I'd be liable for postage back but its an idea

Re: the ebay idea - I looked at this and while the camera is cheap, have you seen what they charge for postage, it would probably rule me out of the cash back deal - i think it has to be bought in the EU although I couldnt swear to it, and theres also the outside chance of being stung for customs so I ruled it out

The euro / sterling rate is so good now, combined with the very low postage charge swung it for me - although admitedly its a lot cheap now :(

EDIT: This from the 7DayShop so its an option
    "
Cancellation of Order - You have the right to cancel your order within 7 days of receipt and have a refund for any cancelled items provided that you return the goods to us in perfect condition and that the return does not consist of any copyrighted or perishable goods. The goods to be returned must be unused, unopened and in their original packaging. We do not refund your original order postage cost, and the cost of return postage is payable by you. We suggest that you use a recorded delivery method as we can not be held responsible for any losses incurred in transit back to us.
IMPORTANT - We cannot accept returns for the following items...
    CD's, DVD's, Software, Photographic Film"

Further Edit - I emailed this to them - you never know

"Hi. Further to my email earlier re the price difference on the 40D (reminder: I paid 694 tuesday and today its been slashed to 628), its been pointed out by a colleague that I have the right under EU law to return the item for a full refund within 7 days of receipt (it will arrive probably next week some time) and reorder it at the lower price. For the sake of good customer relations and saving hassle all around and as I plan to make more purchases, is there any chance of getting the difference in price refunded on this item - £66. "

Why don't you email them first and see if they're willing to refund you the difference...

    Hi Helios

Yeah I edited my post above with a copy what I sent them - you never know they might have a soul somewhere...

Basically the price diff is 84 euro - it'll cost me about 15 to ship it back so thats about €70 net. They then have 30 days to refund it.

So it could be up to 5 weeks before I get the refund. Then place a new order - maybe 6 weeks before I get the camera - and Im due to sell my 400D in two weeks.

I know me - that box will arive next week and I wont be able to stop myself opening it :) I'll be like a child at christmas. Especially since its not just the camera but the grip as well as a few batteries and filters.

I'll post back whatever they say.

For the sake of 70 euro enjoy your new camera.. I thought you were going to say you dropped it in the bath opening it or something.. There are A LOT worse things that can happen!!
    Best of luck with 40D

Well it could work depending on your wording. Any company would rather lose €70 for a refund rather than €800 for a return, so you might be able to persuade them.

Ask them to send you free nifty-fifty :-)

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,300 ✭✭✭PixelTrawler

Helios, my tactic first was to imply id reorder at their site, if they say no my next tactic will be to suggest I might just order else where - Im hoping what you think is what they'll think!

    ThOnda - nice thinking:)

I dont think you should have sent that mail, shoulda just said "alri boss, need a refund, thanks" and sent it back

ah well, let us know how it pans out

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,300 ✭✭✭PixelTrawler

Nothing lost yet, EU law states a full refund can be obtained with 7 days of receipt simply that the item is unwanted.

Unreggd cheers for sparking off the idea anyway.

We'll see tomorrow how it this goes. I want the company to at least think I'll go to the effort of going through with a refund and also consider I wont necessarily shop there again.

Im hoping they'll see it pragmatically - the end result will be the same - so why not refund the difference.

A german mate of mine knows of people with the same experience from german online stores and they did refund the difference so we'll see.

I watched the video tour of the camera again on the canon site and I know full well I'll rip open that box as soon as it arrives:D - it seems to be an amazing camera

alot of hassel and risk just for the price involved.
Worst case scenario package gets lost being sent up and back, can you get insurance on the post aswell?

Yeah! - 40D arrived. No reply from 7dayshop on that email but 5 minutes playing with the camera and it was all forgotten!

Seems a serious piece of kit... even the batteries charge quicker - theres so many improvements over the 400D - mind you theres one or two very minor things that bug me as well but only because im so used to the 400D - I think i'll adjust over fairly quickly.

It is a heavy beast mind you, the 400D plus grip is a lot lighter then the 40D plus grip - I can imagine getting a bit tired on long hikes with the 40D.
