I'm looking at the Dell site at the minute. It doesn't seem to say what the actual brand of memory they use. It just displays the option like 4.0GB 800MHz Non-ECC DDR2 SDRAM (4*1,024MB DIMM) .

Also is there anyway of knowing what motherboard comes with the spec?

    Thanks for any help.

Dell as a whole just use rebranded gear. Motherboards for example are primarily made by intel and just dell branded. Same for graphics cards and the likes. Ram can come from anyone really, Its best to use a memory configurator ( like the crucial one ) to find out exactally where it comes from.

The scanner can be found here:

Even within the same PC model you might find differences in hardware (hard drives, dvd, etc), all depends on their supply chain.

Dell buys whatever's cheapest at the time for them. I used to work there building laptops and I'd see various brands used in any one day - Hynix, Infineon, Qimonda, Kingston, Micron, Samsung, etc. You won't know what's in it till you get it. Same goes for HDDs, optical drives, etc. though there's less of a choice with these.

AFAIK the motherboards are actually designed by/for Dell. But they still don't manufacture them - they'd get various vendors to make them. Chinese or Taiwanese, of course :)

And their motherboards are BTX. They're slowly changing to ATX however

Cheers for the replies, so basically with Dell you have to take whatever you're given. Sounds to me like it might be better to pay a bit more for a product that you actually know what you get beforehand.

I'm thinking of going with a German crowd www.hardwareversand.de I was told that many people on this forum use them, any opinions on them?

I have bought individual parts ( mobo, graphics card, cpu, ram) from them and they are very good, only negatives being delivery time ( 2 to 3 weeks ) and bank transfer ( dont accept credit cards)....

Many here have being building full systems with them for ages, nearly all have had very good experiences...
