Metal Gear Solid; The Twin Snakes

Ok, so I've been playing this game The Twin Snakes now for some time, and I think its great. It doesnt add much to the overall storyline of the original game on PSOne, asides from a mixed up piece of dialogue here and there, but what it does do is give the viewer the chance to relive a classic game with better graphics.

It was made by Nintendo and Silicon Knights, Nintendo having originally turned down Sony's offer to work together on the PSOne, so it must have been an interesting turn of events that saw Konami offer them a Gamecube exclusive with the remake. It was also released in 2004, when Gamecube had the exclusive Capcom rights to Resident Evil - which should have put Gamecube on the map.

In any case, I wanted to know what people taught of it, the gameplay and replaying the same game a few years later with better graphics. For those who played MGS TS as their first introduction to this story, did they then hunt down an emulator or old PSone to play the original, or what?

I thought it played really well, the MGS 2 added some updated gameplay elements although it made it a little easier than the original. I particularly liked how they added some new attack patterns to the bosses. Like how they managed to get practically all the original voice cast back as well.

However what really ruined the game for me were the absolutely ludicrous and over the top cutscenes that didn't fit in with solid snakes character or the rest of the series. Some of the super human feats snake preforms were laughable and it's due to this that I'd always recommend MGS on the PS1 over this.

Strangely, i never played the original MGS on the PS1 so when i played this, it was my first time experiencing it. I must say i enjoyed it.

The cut scenes aren't as bad as people say, if you think they're over the top you're taking MGS too seriously and you should go take a look at the cutscenes in some of the other games, especially MGS3.

The "MGS with MGS2's engine" approach; adding in lockers to hide in, first person aiming, etc. made the game ridiculously easy on any level. It's ok for a quick play through, but the original still stands the best for all the original cast, original engine, and VR missions missing from TTS.

Id forgotten about that, I have to say that when I played MGS3 I must have just sat and watched 30mins of FMV at the beginning of the game before actually playing anything of substance, it was really shocking how much of that 3rd title was made up of FMVs

Never played MGS3, but I loved TTS as it had the cutscenes, yeah, but they were nowhere near as annoyingly dragged out and silly as the ones in MGS2...

I thought the cut scenes were brilliant. OTT and crazy which matches the mad tone of the story throughout the series. I remember being really excited to see what they did with them as they announced that they got in Ryuhei Kitamura (http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0457565/) to redo the cut scenes. So if you liked the style of them check out Versus its in a similar vein.
As for the game I thought it was better than 2 story-wise as 2 goes off the rails as soon as Raiden appears and you do training all over again (wtf???). I enjoyed it more than the original and its because of the remake that every now and then I get the urge to splurge on a backwards compatible PS3 to play through 3&4 when it comes out. Never got a PS2.

Edit: Also just found this re:Ryuhei Kitamura; Japanese game developer Hideo Kojima (famous for the Metal Gear Solid series) appears as one of the outlandish ruffians killed by Azumi in the final battle. Thats from the movie Azumi. Pretty cool! :-D

    Class!:D
I'll have to watch Azumi again and look out for that

I personally enjoyed TTS, it was nice to play through one of my favourite games again with jazzed up graphics. The cutscenes weren't all that bad from what I remember...

Strange, felt completely differently about the third title in the series. What I loved about it so much was the total lack of cutscenes for the most part. Sure the first hour had a rake of interferring cutscenes of almost MGS2 proportions but after that you were left on your own to play the game for most of it.

Never in the series have the cutscenes been as over the top as in Twin Snakes. I think the worst part was snake jumping on the helicopters missle while firing a stinger back at it. Absolutely dreadful stuff.

The only thing I didnt like in the Twin Snakes is the fact that nearly every 'boss' seems to give up their convictions when they're near death, in a very overdramatic way. It seems as if no one, with the possible exception of Liquid Snake, is actually really evil to begin with. For example...
Sniper Wolf seems to be a good person who was born into the wrong life, Vulcan Raven never agreeded with the plans of the group anyway, and Decoy Octopus gives you the L1 Card to advance in the game

Well it it gives them a bit more character doesn't it even if it's a bit hammy (it was actually handled a lot better in the original imo even if one or two were hammy) anyway even the point you make about decoy octopus was part of his and liquids plan in the long run.

I found a review on www.socksmakepeoplesexy.net which I'm totally in agreement with about the cutscenes :)
The cutscenes have all been completely re-written, and I think it's for the worst. If you're a Matrix fan and can't get enough motion-blur and bullet-time effects then you're gonna absolutely ****ing LOVE this game's cinematics. EVERYTHING is bullet-timed. I MEAN ****ING EVERYTHING! Bullet-timed and over the top ****ing ridiuclous. Snake can't just walk past a door, he's gotta ****ing cartwheel 20 feet into the air OVER IT! He can't dodge a missile, he's gotta jump up onto it and do a backflip off it to get himself off the roof of a building. I'm sorry, but this just doesn't sound like the kind of stuff Snake would be doing. He IS a super soldier, but he's not a ****ing Ninja anime character. It really made a lot of critical points of the game almost laughable.

www.gameseek.co.uk is the cheapest place on the web and the most reasonable. They have some brand new copies from when it was a 'Players Choice' title

Im assuming by the 20th Anniversary Boxset you mean http://www.play-asia.com/paOS-13-71-43-49-en-70-21vx.html launched in Japan last year. Id love to get my hands on the Documentary DVD it came with. This will never come to the Europe, mainly because most game stores in the UK and Ireland dont know how to market this kind of collectors stuff. Gamestation would be an exception.

    This.

Fighting Psycho Mantis was an absolute joke, a few rounds to the noggin and he drops like a sack of psychokinetic spuds. At least the guards in the M1 had the decency to duck when Snake went into 1st person.

The cutscenes were ridiculous and, in a way, took away from the game but it doesn't mean that they can't be enjoyed in the same way that i enjoy watching Commando, Total Recall or certain films by Michael Bay :pac:

I had a dream last night someone posted a thread about MGS Twin Snakes and you replied. Then I woke up and saw it was real. I feel so confused.

You were dressed as a Pirate and kept stuffing Euromillions tickets into your mouth until you blew up.

Bertie Ahern wins the Euromillions and retires to Malaga =/

Hilarious cutscenes aside, its still a great game, made me so happy when I got it after playing the PS1 version years beforehand
