We had NTL out last week to get us wired up and connected after moving house a few weeks ago.

They had a look at how the place is wired up, cable comes from the road to the front of the house, over the roof, down allong the gable wall (onto neighboring property) around to the rear wall and in to the conservatory under the gutter some place.

Anyway... they had had a look and concluded it wouldn't be possibly (at least not easy) to replace the old wire. Reason being he wouldn't have been able to get at the rear wall because of the conservatory and the gable wall because there is a shed along side our gable belonging to the neighbor in their garden. I'll draw a quick plan of it...

Cian color is the consevatory, red is the cable from ntl

So end result was that we just have basic tv instead of digital :(

Now today we received a letter from NTL that they would be upgrading all the cables in our area over the next 12 weeks. Should i get them to do it properly this time?

EDIT: The house description might be a little unclear, the row of houses we live on has each house pushed back a little bit, our house is the one pushed back the furthest on the row.

Weird. I would have thought that they want the business, you sure it wasnt just a lazy tech?
Was it an NTL van or was there something else written on the side?

    It was an unmarked van.

I don't have it shown on the drawing there but there's a small shed up against the gable wall of our house in the neighbors yard. For him to put a ladder over it wouldnt allow him to reach the wall and fix the cable. At least thats how i read it.

I think i might give them a call to see will they come out and give it another go.

We only have basic tv now, 18 channels, which is 23 euro and digital is only 3euro more for many more channels

Sounds a bit hairy of a job if I'm reading it right. The contractor doesn't get paid unless he gets the job done so its in his interest to do it. Possible for safety reason is why he couldn't do it. You could get an electrician to run a new cable is another idea for you.
Are you sure the cable running in needs to be replace? Hows the analogue pictures looking. Is there no alternative route you could bring the cable through, possibly in through the front of your house?.

We rent the house so im not sure how the landlord would feel about running the cable trough the front.

Analogue picture can be a little hazy.

Well that kills off a few of your options. Only thing is to move house then :D

The consevatory is the problem, the orginal cable was probably put in before it was build. You could always try get UPC out again, complain about your picture quality and see what they can work out. Might be worth talking to your landlord to see which other way they would allow you to run it.
