Eddie O'Sullivan has resigned as the Ireland coach.

The Cork man was appointed in 2001 and is widely regarded as the most successful Irish coach in the modern era.

'At the conclusion of the Six Nations championship and having given my role as national team head coach much consideration, I have come to the decision to step down,' O'Sullivan said in a statement.

'In doing so I would like to thank my management team and all the players that I have worked with during my tenure as Irish coach.

'Their commitment and professionalism in representing their country has been consummate throughout.

'I would also like to thank the IRFU for their unwavering support of me as coach to the team.

'In addition, I would like to thank the Irish rugby supporters who have played a huge role in driving the team on to some outstanding performances in recent years.

'Finally, I would like to wish the Irish rugby team and the IRFU every success in the future, in a professional sport that is becoming more demanding and competitive by the day.

'I will not be making any further comments on this issue for the foreseeable future, and I would ask that the privacy of both myself and my family at this time be respected.'

Resigns my hole, he got a hefty pay off I'd say

Although rumours are his contract only kicks in April 1 onwards.

But lets keep it all nice and friendly by the blazers in Landsdowne Rd.

I was surprised when I saw this thread.. don't know why.

I think it's for the best.

I danced a wee jig when I heard the news a few minutes ago. He was the Bertie Ahern of Irish rugby, in that never has someone had so many resources at his disposal and so many talented players at one time and accomplished comparitively little.

Bring on Jake White or Conor O'Shea.

well if he has resigned that would save the IRFU alot of money, although could be similar to the FAI/stan 'mutial agreement'

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 9,255 ✭✭✭anonymous_joe

Great news if we move to get a strong coach now. Jake White or Eddie Jones types. ;)

probably 7 figures.....wonder if the IRFU have it in the accounds

This is great news. Eddie was great for Irish rugby, but he's just been aimless for a little too long now.

The team needs a new coach with a new strategy. I just hope that whoever gets the job will be supported in making difficult changes if they need to be made. Radical changes are necessary.

You never know, we may also see a new captain, fresh start and all that. I wonder if Keith Gleeson will reconsider his decision.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 10,462 ✭✭✭✭WoollyRedHat

Agreed, we need to really have an Irish rugby reform if we're to be A). A peforming side
B). An entertaining side and C). A Consistent side

That's what the new manager needs to be bring, with reforms to the squad and better passing etc.

Keith Woods in the backroom staff perhaps?

I'd imagine it's more a case of the IRFU letting him keep a bit of dignity. I'd say he was given the golden handshake and told he could either announce he was resigning or be sacked. There's no way in the world Eddie O'Sullivan would leave the job without his payout.

What about Keith Wood? He's another young buck for the future.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,686 ✭✭✭EdgarAllenPoo

In all fairness Woody has no coaching experience, didn't Mick Galway say he wanted to be team manager? Sign him up.

Although I'm sure they have the money I see the IRFU playing the poor boys card and saying they can't afford White. In all fairness I'd have liked to see Nick Mallet get the job ( I know that's unrealistic now). How's about Bernard Laporte. Only joking.

    :pac:Bernard Laporte:pac::(

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,252 ✭✭✭Funkstard

Well that's the end of an era. I've been a critic of him here for a while now, but since I've started following rugby he's been at the helm and it's a bit of a shock to finally read what I was hoping for.

It's unfortunate that his reign ended on a sour note with regards to performances, but such is the nature of sport I suppose. Despite all the criticism he received recently, he coached the team to some great results. Thanks, and good luck to him for the future!

I really hope not. We need a coach who knows none of the players or systems, has no preconceptions and just starts from square 1.

Jake White is the only way

So you want the rugby equivalent of Steve Staunton then?

Pat Howard would be good based on his record but I'm not sure he'd fit in with the IRFU.

    How about John Connolly?

conor o'shea just got a promotion today to some big wig job, dont even know if its to do with rugby.so hes ruled out.Its ridiculous,we should be getting him to do our youth setup

He could easily be part of the back room team with the new manager ( Keith Wood)

Is Clive Woodward still messing about in soccer? He was a bit of a micro manager like Eddie but did spread the load a good bit and look what he accomplished with an England team who weren't half as good as the Irish team is now.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 11,505 ✭✭✭✭DirkVoodoo

    Woohoo!

At least he stepped down with some dignity, I would have hated some protracted battle between media/public and IRFU. Onwards and Upwards!

at Leicester. Sadly theres very few to pick from

I wonder will Denis o Brien contribute to the new rugby managers wages?

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 727 ✭✭✭Oilrig

Jake White earned 1.8M Rand last year... depending on x rates thats between 180 - 250K Euro... SARU got good value there.

His value/cost today would be a whole lot more than that.

Glad EOS has gone, thanks for the good times Eddie but it was time to go.

The rumour mill will now go into overdrive.

To steal a motto, per ardua ad astra.

    Eddie's only decision in a long time that I've supported 100% :D

About time, glad he's gone and we didn't have another Staunton/FAI - esque stand off.

Eddie was a great manager, in his day, pity his day came and went about 12 months before he realised it.

Thanks for the memories, now it's time to move on.

Firstly - good riddance Eddie. Having,. at your disposal, arguably the most talented bunch of Irish players in living memory you managed them to ineptitude.
Secondly - forget all this nonsense of coaches needing experience. This sort of blinkered vision is typical of the old regime & EOS. Look, he's gone, we can throw away the blinds. Lets open our eyes. Keith Wood is the best no 2 ever to play for Ireland. He understands running rugby as a forward. He's was an inspirational leader on the pitch and would make an inspirational manager off it, IMO.
Thirdly - I have had enough of bull****ters, lets get a guy who has the fire in his belly and is not afraid to experiment.

    As for O'Shea, http://www.lions-tour.com/news/viewarticle.asp?id=11514

As for White, he's completely wrong for the job. He won a poor world cup with an slightly above average team and has the personality of a bad car accident.. I think we're gonna regret this media hounding of EOS. The next 1-2 years are gonna be a period of extreme uncertainty and we will lose a lot of still excellent players along the way. EOS could of turned this around, he is and will continue to prove to be, a great coach, however he was a coach hanmstrung by a union who wanted only results. Forget about Keith Gleeson riding in on a white horse, EOS picked the best players in Irish Rugby Union, and these players, as they have for Leinster for example, continued to underperfom.. Two coaches, Cheika and EOS, one group of players, one common denonminator.. As for the Munster gang, to blame their underperformance on EOS is naive in the extreme. They're grown ups. Fully paid professionals and they know what's right, but when you're playing with a champagne back line that has been left out for too long, you can't blame them, but then again, you can't blame the coach.. We will regret losing EOS and we will not find a quality coach in the short term, we will plough the development field in the interest of progress, and all the while truly great players like O'Connell, D'arcy, Horgan, Leamy, Wallace, O'Driscoll and O'Gara will age and eventually retire without realising their potential.

Tonight might seem the beginning.. it is, but it's the beginning of the end.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,686 ✭✭✭EdgarAllenPoo

I'd agree with the fire in the belly thing, I wouldn't expect that we'll beat the All Blacks so why not use summer internationals to mix established talent with some new blood in preperation for the 09 Six Nations which is realistically the only competition we need to worry about at the minute.

I have to wish Eddie the best of luck, he has done enough for us and has made the right choice for his and the teams future.

We have had some great times

    scoreboard.jpg

Lets hope we see a suitible replacement and lets hope we see it happen sooner rather than later like we got with that joke FAI.

Conor O'Shea - never, we want to go forwards not backwards

What makes you say that? Because he's too close to the setup, or him personally? Though it seems a moot point now.

The English team didn't play pretty rugby, but they were damn good at the ugly rugby they did play. They had an awesome pack that could steamroll through others, and a 10 who could kick like nothing else.

Look at the resources Woodward had for the Lions tour, and how that went.
