I reeeeeeaaalllly want either a Jaguar or Jazzmaster. My advice though is to try and play both of them (if you can) and see if ya prefer either of them before buying.

the japanese jags need a pickup change to stop them being tinny and squeaky.

the jazzies are better to my ears, but the jags sound awful stock, they need some beefy pickups and a real good setup for the bridge.

if the thurston moore thing is what you're after then go for a jazzy. ;)

Jaguars and Telecasters have pretty different tones. I'd say go for which one you prefer sound-wise. :)

+1, Best advice is to try before you buy, and then pop online and choose the one you want.:)

I have an AV Jag and a Highway1 strat and my advice would be to try both guitars until they kick you out of the shop. The two guitars are worlds apart.

Jag's have a short scale length and pretty much no sustain. Which doesnt make them the best guitar in the world for soloing on. They are great for jangly chordy stuff and of course surf music - which is what they were designed for.

I had my jag's bridge changed and a proper set up. be prepared for that kind of extra work too. They are a difficult and not very versatile guitar, but a very pleasing one indeed. Love the tone with both pickups on and the bass-cut on, with lots of crunchy distortion.

Consider your preferred sound and the type of music you intend playing.

and on the price of the tele musicstore stock a proper fender MN Tele for 399 when the sale is on.And i get alot of problems trying them out cause i get kicked out of waltons(****e shop) in about 5minutes unless i have a ****ing note from the president

jags have very short scale, make sure you play one first,
    they are not for me

i have a jazz and love it
worlds away from a tele in sound
but i love the tele bridge sound so much!

jazzmasters are more comfy to play than teles

    try before you buy

i have just replied to the jazzmaster thread
if you want more jazzmaster info

(p.s. dont let people tell you jazzmasters
are gimmicks or retro looks only, they are unique
and sound and play great, when set up right)

I recently bought a jag. It's the HH special one. Black and silver. pic here

I bought it purely for astethic reasons, I love the shape of it. A work of art!
For the last few years I've been playing an SG that I love, because of its Humbuckers. So made sure the jag i got had humbuckers.

I've only been playing the jag about a week but have noticed.
It's got good sustain. The neck is a joy to play but have noticed that it can be a bit of a tight squeeze higher up the neck. Not a bad thing either as I play with my thumb and needed a neck that wasn't as wide (as a gibson) to pull off some chords. once you've figured out all the switches and slides and whatnot, The different pickup combos give you a nice range of sounds. Cue some dick dale.

I took a chance and bought the guitar off the net. So far, no regrets. I would recommend going in and checking them out in some guitar shops first though.

Go up all innocent and play stupid saying " I'm looking at spending around the 1200 mark on a guitar, can you recommend any?" Listen to what they say nodding along and going "uh huh, yep, oh right, yeah" etc. all the while edging over to the guitar you wanna play.

    Works for me.

Cheers. Do you know what the HH stands for?
I was tempted to get the baritone but no way does it look half as good as the one i got.

    humbucker humbucker, i'd imagine

Of course I do! Tsk! Everything I use is that format. LP, ASAT Deluxe, RGT, OLP MM1 (now sold). Have a Strat, hate it, have a squire, only use it once every six months or so but it is hotrodded and tuned to CGCFAD. :D

In short, HH ftw!!! (well splitable like on the RGT and ASAT for when you really want singles)

Edit: I now realise that you might have actually been asking (it's humbucker humbucker, HSH is with a single in the middle and so on) I mistook your question as perhaps a condesending remark, and I apologise.

:D It was sincere my good sir. You learn something new every day. I know little about actual types of pickups etc, just humbuckers are wired out of phase to stop noise. I never bothered with the whole "yes, i've the zx 125 slash lmnop" cause simply I couldn't afford any of the stuff. I bought the guitar on impulse ffs!

All I could recommend changing for sure on a stock guitar is STRAP LOCKS! little beauties that are saviours of guitars. What i recommend is
    1) see the roundy bit that's meant to connect to your strap? forget it!
    2) place the screw in the guitar body and then the strap on the peg thing, then the lock onto the peg. this works far better than the original design.

~That's a bit of a bizarre rant, but I'm in a funny mood.

Did what I think you are talking about to my LP and it ripped out and damaged the guitar. Had to drill out the hole and glue in a dowel. Then reverted to the normal way. The rubber seals of Grolsch bottles do me fine. Don't jump around much anyway!

Replacing pickups is a sure fire way of drastically improving the sound of a guitar. The standard pickups on guitars apart from really high end stuff are shockingly bad. Well worth the investment. Replaced them on all my regularly used guitars apart from the G&L as they are pretty damn perfect as is.

Congrats again on a quality impulse buy though!
