    Howdy,

Never bought any apple kit before (bar the iPod) and I have a question for anyone who’s willing....

Brother in law with a massive music collection asked me to get him a nice cheap solution for streaming his music around his house from one location. Rather than getting another box to act as a media server I came across the Apple offerings which i read like this....

I can have him load his collection onto a .5TB external drive, which I will then hook up to an Apple Airport Extreme Base station (which in turn will also be his wireless home router) Then I plan on hooking up an airport or two around his house to provide tunes to whichever stereo he wants to stream to. All of this to be controlled by his laptop...

If it was as easy as this I'd snap it up but somehow i doubt it, anyone have any experience with a setup like the above?

The Airport Extreme does not have the audio out that the Airport Express does, so will not be usable as an Airtunes terminal. Other than that, your plan sounds perfectly do-able IMO.

Yeah, you want an Airport Extreme/Time Capsule as a basestation, with satellite Airport Express around the house to stream music to stereos.

Apple just bumped the spec up to 802.11n, so you'll get a much further range and better transfer speeds with compatible hardware now too.

Hmmm excellent cheers. I knew the base station has no Audio out, just using it as the distributer, the little airports will do the trick, as well as “supposedly” boosting the network range…we shall see.

Do you need the Airport Extreme BS? An alternative *cheaper* brand will do...

I had a Netgear wireless router and Airport Express. From my MacMini, I can stream music to the AE already...
