Opening a DOC file

I have a spreadsheet I'm trying to open. Everytime I do it says 'there is insufficient memory'. In properties, it says its a DOC file. Can anyone help me? I've tried opening it in MS word processor and OpenOffice.

    Thanks

Doc would indicate it's a word file and not an excel file. Spreadsheet would be .xls.

    No it's a Word file from any version (6.0, 2000, XP, 2003, 2007) etc.

    docx is 2007 anyway

Yep, docx is Microsoft Open Office XML, introduced with Office 2007. You can still save Word files as .doc in 2007 to allow older versions of Office to open.

Thanks for the replies:) Any idea on how to open the file though?

If it is indeed a spreadsheet rename it from whatever.doc to whatever.xls. See if it opens then.
