I need to get broadband for a new place and have looked into a few options. Eircom which will be line rental + broadband is gonna cost approx €700 for the first year after installation and everything else. but i assume it'll be reliable.

i've spoken to some tech type people who say avoid people like clearwire as "they arent good". i'm only looking to play about online and play poker. do i need eircom, or bt broadband, or one of the line rental plus etc companies or would one of the "broadband in a box" companies do the trick?

Get NTL if you can to avoid paying line rental.

Avoid broadband in a box, extremely slow and unreliable. Their breeze fixed wireless package does a good job though, 36 euro/per month with no installation fees for the 2mb package.

I pay 35 p/m to NTL for BB and a further 10 to Blueface for VOIP (unlimited phone calls), no eircom line rental. Pretty reliable, main problems have been with my own gear

It's 2mb upload and download. They install a satellite on the roof and run a cable down, takes a few hours to install.

    There's a 3mb package for 48.40 a month as well.

It's a fairly small satellite so could probably go on a wall too, I was able to get sky installed for an apartment before. Ask the landlord and see what he says I suppose.

I could only get "satellite type" broadband where I work in the sticks, and dial-up was costing a fortune, €60 a month+. So I got O2 broadband. Works fine, speed is grand although not lightning fast. Depends on signal obviously. Find a friend who has mobile broadband and try it. It's ok for €30 a month.
