What you may not need to know the person next to you may need to know.

And thus is the delight of school. Relevancy to you, irrevelancy to someone else, vice versa.

"So when are schools gonna chance for the better?"

I think you need to brush up on the basics before you can comment intelligently. You know, punctuation and such?

Ten years after some other country has already successfully implemented it.
There'll be a lengthy fact-finding mission and a number of proposals will be draughted.

Random thought of the day: If P.E. was such an important part of my education, how come there was no test? I would have aced the standing around in a muddy field exam. :|

Gee, I sure hope that your school changes for the better, or were you not listening when they told you how to use capital letters & full stops?

How can you know what you want when you don't know anything?

I think one problem with secondary schools is that there's a large amount of specialisation from an early age. You can have people who never see a science book after they're 12 years old and similarly people who know nothing of art except for taking water-based paints on a Friday and painting pictures of a happy sun.

If the Junior cycle was modular with yearly testing, you'll have people entering the senior cycle with much more varied experience. That is, most of us do nine subjects for Junior cycle over 6 semesters. Why not have the 2 core subjects of English and Maths, plus an elective language, and then use the other 6 slots for modules? That gives a possible 36 different modules that can be completed in the three years. Imagine the depth of education people would have.

Most of the senior cycle can be covered in 2 years. I did Technical Graphics in 5th year, having not done it for the Junior Cert, and came out with a B2 at higher level.

Are you trying to derail your own thread?

The school system is pretty damn good. There are compromises, yes, but it's pretty damn good. Most of the bitching and whinging is just self-absorbed people who believe that if it doesn't suit them, it's not fair or there's a problem with something or whatever.

Never. We're too conformed to it. Even if we tries there be uproar.

If there was a liberal minded teacher who had come good ideas and tried to do things differently, he'd be fired in weeks.

What would you like to see done? Personally, I think we could do with a bit more philosopy, psyvhology, anger-management/meditation, and NO subject compulsory after the junior cert at the latest

Everything I don't like is either woke or fascist - possibly both - pick one.

Oh, I see what you did there. Care to follow up with any actual response? Cite sources illustrating international examples of preferable systems? Discuss the actual reasons you disagree with me?

Now, that's the problem right there. It wouldn't be deep. it would be broad but not deep. we already have less depth in our courses than a lot of countries when we finish school.

First thing they should do is get rid of job securiy for teachers and make it so that bad ones have to improve.

Second, streamed classes wherever possible. If someone wants to be a dick and be a disruption then let them do it where others like them won't mind. Try and dicipline them but don't let otheres disrupt other students.

Third, stop being so condecending(I'm saying this to the department, not the poster i quoted). If you want to teach C.S.P.E., then do it properly and introduce students to different political ideals as well as getting them to discuss the merits of different systems.

Bring practical subjects into the mainstream. Do not leave people who wish to do something like metalwork to feel marginalised.

Finally and most important: FIRE MARY HANNIFAN

And have a high turnover of teachers who are insecure, inexperienced and who are forced to be popular with the students in order to remain in employment?

    Most schools have these already.

When you are teachings someone the dynamic is that of a person who is knowledgeable about a subject imparting that knowledge to those who are not so knowledgeable. This obviously involves condecension. If, for example, a teacher were to speak to his students at his own level, they would not understand him, because he already has the knowledge and they don't. CSPE is about giving students a basic understanding of Civil, Social, Political and Economic principles. It is not politics class. Students can learn about different political ideals themselves.

School is there to give students a basic foundation in education. It is not there to do your learning for you. If you are interested in something extra cirricular you can look it up yourself.

While in principle I would agree, you have to also look at the reality that a person who gets A1s in metal work, technology, home economics and woodwork might not be an ideal candidate for, for example, a course in business, law, medicine etc.

You can't fire a politican. They are elected representatives. What is the point of teaching you about communism, nihilism, dictatorship etc when you don't even understand how the parliamentary democracy system works.

As regards the Mary Hannifan comment, i was refering to firing her as a minister. I am fully aware that she cannot b e fired completely in the traditional sense.

As regards the practical subject, that is a concern. Perhaps some sort of weighting system of relevant LC subjects and college courses. For example, someone economics would be weighted higher if someone wished to study this in college than say, biology.

I was not expecting school to do the learning for you. This is one of the biggest problems with irish education. However, talking down to students doesn't help.

The streaming doesn't happen properly. Rather than the students being sorted out by say top middle and bottom 30. It should be a case of above a certain average.

Finally, regarding the teachers. People who have job security get sloppy. There's a difference in teachers being insecure and knowing that they have to be good at their job.

I don't follow you. As in have a top half and a bottom half? What's the difference there, other than there being 2 streams instead of 3?

They are finding it pretty difficult to get good new teachers at the moment. Get rid of the permanancy and the benefits of a state job, and they will have no one but arts drop outs applying for teachers jobs (as opposed to arts grads that is).
