going through a few threads it seems that an awful lot of boardsers work in offices! not being cruel here but are men getting softer through time? i work with my hands , im an electrician in a factory and spend most of the day under machines/in machines etc. im happy enough doing mechanical stuff as well as electrical work.. changing gearboxes on motors, bleeding hydraulic pumps etc. as i said im not criticising, just curious as to how society is progressing/regressing. do school-leavers want to be tradesmen anymore or does everyone want to work in an air-conditioned office?

Is it just blokes you're referring to here, or what?

Offices were only invented 20 years ago. Before that all men worked 37 hour days labouring and building stuff.

    FACT.

20 years ago? interestingly that's when the internet got popular.

    Not me.

I'm a Gardener/Landscape type person :) (Not quite the "Landscape Artist yet"

Worked in an office before, but nothing beats being able to stand back and truly admire your work. I never felt that way in the office. Never looked forward to going in. Nowadays, (I don't work full time) whenever I have a job on, I can't wait!

I had absolutely no interest in being a tradesman from a young. Never appealed to me at all even though my Dad is a sheet metal worker. However, I was really good at English at school and also at expressing my opinions so I pursued a career in journalism. Started off with sport, now I report on and review new infrastructure projects in Australia. I certainly don't consider myself 'soft' because I work in an office. Different strokes.

My father used to be a mechanic. Years or watching him under filthy cars in cold, damp garages put me off that sort of work forever.

Aren't the young people these days so lucky... Back in my day, we used to work 24 hours every day! Carting animals here and turf there, ah jaysus, i better stop.

well no, i'm a student, and boards.ie doesn't get past the stupid firewall in my school... so me has to hacks it! I'd like to work in a front office job, not a back office job, because i like meeting people and doing all the PR stuff.. I hate being stuck in the same room as some people day in day out.

I want to work in a lab!

It's like an office, only way cooler, and with labcoats instead of "smart casual".

Do you also believe the 'greys' or aliens are us, in the future?

Larger heads, smaller hands, and eyes black from staring at monitors?

    Hmmm.

I love working in my office. Flexi time, air conditioning, net access. I did my share of time with retail and physical labour, and I can safely say I will never willingly go back.

I work in a giant complex that encompasses Medieval, Futuristic, Industrial and even Aztec technologies. I lead groups of people around and this complex and help them hunt for crystals, although I do get to lock some of them in rooms which is a nice job perk.

Can I ask the people questions to see if you can lock them in or not?

Work as a technician, 70 to 80 % of my time is spent working on machines, the other is spent doing office work. Have been doing it for 13 years and would love to change but I am too settled at the moment, new house and all that. So I would say that there is quite a large spectrum of people on these boards, from young to old (me), and all kinds of jobs I would imagine.

I work in an office physically but I'm a postgrad student. So there's no messy office politics or dress codes or the like. Usually all of us are never actually in at the same time, I'm usually alone until about 10 in the morning.

I do most of my own car and bike repairs to maintain my manliness

Doubt it. Any fully qualified tradesman should be earning a minimum of €900 a week. Most will earn more.

There is almost always overtime to be done in trade work and nixers too.

absolutely not - have any idea how much people charge to have a look/quote before doing anywork? one tradesman told me it would cost me €200.00 just for the quote

Yay someone would like to do work like mine:D

Actually it is like that. You get the benefits of office- air con, internet etc but also the chance to work with your hands and get stuck in.

Oh yeah and if you leave your labcoat unbuttoned on the corridor you can pretend you're Darth Vader;)

I'm in the trades (decorator) currently slow with work so I'm home doing SFA.
You can hardly expect to wander into a forum and find a lot of people posting that don't work in an office and therefore with a PC to enable them to use the net...in my line of work the only time I see a computer is either when I'm throwing a drop cloth over it or in the colour mixing section in the paint shop.
Personally speaking I could never work in an office or factory, in the same place doing the same things with the same people every day, with cliques of people, targets to meet, all that BS...that's not to say that there's anything "soft" about it, it's just not my thing.
That said, I didn't come out of school wanting to go into the trades, it's just something I eneded up doing because I liked it and was good at it, maybe if I applied myself a bit more during my education I'd be doing something more lucrative, but what's to say that I'd even like it?
You'll also find a lot of students and school goers on here for the same reason as office workers; ie. access to PCs all day and f*ck all else to do...

I used to have a real job but now I work in an office.

It's unbelievable. Every day I go in and I can't believe I actually get paid to sit down and type crap. Really. I'm looking over my shoulder waiting for someone to say "Oi! You're sussed mate! Get your gear and get out!". But it never happens. It's bliss. You get weekends and evenings off. You get paid for overtime. Nobody's shouting.

On the other hand, if I started this job when I started my working life, I'd have lasted 5 seconds through boredom. Now - I just sit back and reflect on all the work I used to have to do to earn a living, vs what I do now to "earn" a similar living. It's bliss.

code monkey here, but as soon as I leave the office I have to get my hands working, whether it's decorating, crafts, cooking, I enjoy producing things that I can hold, not just pretty things that work on the screen...
Offices only invented in 1988 ? where the hell did that "fact" come from ? "Office" work has existed since writing was invented, it's just the scale and the way things are done that have changed.
