Strange USB problem

Everytime i connect or disconnect a usb device or even a wire with no device attatched at the end (i.e. mp3 player) windows thinks I'm trying to install a multimedia audio controller and then tries to find drivers, and failing for obvious reasons.

The first case of this happened tonight when i tried to attach my mates new WD 160gb portable hard drive. Couldnt get it working in the end either. it kept making the connect/disconnect usb sound over and over again until i d/ced it (it worked fine when i plugged it into the laptop)
This now happens every time i connect a usb wire and i have to remove the new entry it makes in device manager.

Its very annoying and i have no idea how to remedy it. I'm also afraid that it'll keep me from installing any new usb devices i may get in the future as it did with the portable hard drive.

Anyone have any idea why this might be happening?

    Thanks

    p.s. I'm running XP SP2

Open device manager and uninstall everything listed under Universal Serial Bus Controllers. Restart the PC and see how it works then.

    Thanks but it didn't work.

It found all my usb devices but it also found the non-existant audio controller. i deleted it again and restarted and it came up again
