My sorry 205 GTi

Here's the story. I bought a 205 GTi in the UK about a year an a half ago, brought it over and paid VRT on it, ran it for a year and now it's lying up and has been since November last and I don't know what to do with it.

I changed car because the big end bearings were going on it and it made a knocking sound when it was running (seems to be a common fault). Also, I think bearings on one of the front wheels needs to be looked at. I also do fairly big miles in the job and it just wasn't economical anymore... Even tho I loved it!

So, my question is, what do I do with this car now.

    Do I:
    1. sell it on as it is and cut my losses? I was thinking of ebay with no
reserve but I'm afriad it'll get pittance as it's a non runner at the moment (relay switch blown) :( AND some little scanger robbed the lion badge from the front of the only last week!
    2. put my hand in my pocket and get it repaired in a garage. I don't know if this would make good sense as it may cost more than I would actually get for the car afterwards.

The 205 GTi's are becoming a bit of a classic and this car will probably be worth a tidy sum of money as soon as I sell it!

    Advice please?

P.S. If there's anyone kind enough to take this on as a project I'd be more than happy to hear from you. I'd actually love to get my hands dirty and help repair it to it's former glory. So if anyone has the knowledge and space, hit me with a PM, Cheers.

Ah ...surely there must be a dedicated 205 GTI community out there that would gladly take that car off your hands for good money.

Do your research for 205 GTI specific sites and advertise it there.

Man firstly can i just say "what a nice car" .

My mate bought a 205 with an Mi16 2.0 ltr engine conversion in it. He's a Pug fan and has also 2 106 rallye's. Sadly the exhaust manifold snaped on her about to months ago and its about 500 sterling for a new one.

Anyways, my advice is be prepared to say no to low offers and wait for the right buyer. You might have to wait afew months but it will pay off, theres still Pug enthusiast out there. Just keep it clean and leave it in your garage (out of sight from passing scumbags!).

    My 2cents! :D

Good luck with the sale man.

A real GTi ! Great looking car. If I had somewhere to put it I'd make you an offer. I would offer to lend you a hand (for free) but my wife is'nt that understanding even though she learned to drive in my own much missed 205. Its a sure fire classic. Do'nt give the car away.
It's still worth a few bob. An enthuasist would probably do an engine rebuild anyway.
    Best of luck.

1.9 GTi, animal of a car. Love those alloys too. It looked much better in Graphite though (IMO)
Can't offer you any advice, but best of luck with whatever you decide to do...there are definitely still entuiasts out there for this kind of car, possibly even an owners web forum with some Irish members...
    Google turns up this:
    http://forum.205gtidrivers.com/
Might get some in depth advice there...

That's a lovely looking car, it'd be a shame to just give it away. I'd repair it before sale - when the right person drives it, they'll have to have it.

Thanks for all the replies guys and the interest shown in my little pug. I'll make my decision of what I'm going to do with it within the week. If I am to sell it as is I'll stick it on adverts.ie and let you all know.

Only thing is, what is it worth in the condition it's in at the moment. I know if it was in pwo it could be worth possibly 3-4k to the right person. When I used to drive it every day, I used to laugh and feel really proud when someone would stop me and ask me if it was for sale. It used to happen about every 2 weeks... Mad. :D

    Here's a few more specs:
    Yes it's the 1.9 GTi... I had to :D
It's got just 74k on the clock (maybe pointless tho with the condition of the engine)
It's a 1991 car WITH the VRT paid (which is rare you have to admit!)
Inside of the car is immaculate bar the worn leather on the drivers seat. The red carpets really look the sh1t.

I planned to take it back to it's original state, bought the original air filter and an original exhaust, never got to fit them tho.

I'll give it a good clean and take some photos over the weekend if I get the time and post back.

If it needs and engine rebuild it's not worth a whole lot unfortuantely.

I really like these old cars, they go well, and still look fresh. White is a good colour too.

If I were in your boots I'd get it done up to 100% original spec. and then sell it. 74k with a rebuild - it'd make good money then.

Remember STG£2000 buys a very good car abroad.

Keep it! Save up some cash to repair it, you'll prob regret selling it if you do!

You could keep it as a Sunday car

Do you know of any 205 specialists? I googled but didn't come up with anything so I'm probably looking for some "local knowledge" here

Damn you Jozi! You're not helping with great suggestions like that, you're just adding to my dilema, lol. Super idea, must be fixed first tho!

    I don't know a specialist, sorry.

And sorry again for not helping your dilemma :D

Any decent mechanic could whip out an engine and rebuild it tbh.

TBH, you'll probably be able to find a 205 GTi in good nick for the cost it will take to repair a dying/dead one.

This is why we got rid of our CTi last year. Fantastic car....but it needed a new roof, which alone would cost the same as buying another of the same in either Switzerland or France, where its still phenomenally popular. We also needed engine repairs, a new exhaust and so on and so forth, and the end result would have run us up the cost of buying two of the same model in good working order.

For a hobby mechanic, its a dream-car to work on, restore, and so forth. For anyone else, IMHO, its just not economical.

Having said that....it was very, very tough to part with our little cabrio, even though it was on its last legs.

Watch this space my friend. I'm waiting to hear back from another offer. If it falls through then it'll be on adverts.ie within the week I'd say.

I hear what you're saying... But what makes it even worse for me is that this was my FIRST CAR. And everyone knows how much they loved their first car, no matter what it was :o

    so, here's what you do:

    1. Drive to France/Switzerland, and get a new hood fitted, there.
    2. Fly to France/Switzerland, but a good, complete, car, and bring it home, and transfer the hood. You now have a complete car for spares - i.e., your car just went UP in value !
    3. Where did you price the hood ? I'm sure there's aftermarket for them now, you don't need to go to a dealer........

I purchased (downloaded <cough>) the Haynes Manual for 205's. After having a read, it doesn't look TOO bad to do yourself :/

Do you guys think either of these would be worth a buy?
