Accom in Amsterdam is going to be hit and miss.

I'd recommend you go for location more so than quality of the hotel.

I stayed in the RHO, its right on Dam Sq and idealy suited for EVERYTHING.

Its a budget hotel, room's are very basic but lovely staff.

Not too many pit falls to visiting 'the Dam for the street wise, but its a large city and so has large city problems.

Try the Lloyd Hotel (www.lloydhotel.com). Stayed there with an ex a couple of years ago, really different, its a historic and you should get a decent deal online (I got €238 + tax for 3 nights in a 3 star room).
Location is OK, its close to a tram which will bring you everywhere anyway.
Its also walking distance to Jamie Oliver's restaurant if you want to splash out!

hotels.nl is a very good site with discounted rates. i stayed in the amsterdam arts two weeks ago. about 10 mins outside the centre on the bus which is right outside and goes 24 hours up and back. 1.60 into town per person..
got 3 nights for 157 euro for two people.

I found it much better to get a shuttle bus form the aiport right to the hotel saved lugging bags threw the town. if you want anymore info pm me

We stayed in the Seven Bridges Hotel. It's a nice, small, clean hotel. They don't have much availability so booking early is advised. It's exactly as you see on the site, it's not the type of hotel I'd generally go for but if I was returning to Amsterdam it would be my first port of call.

    Hi,

Any hotel I've ever stayed in Amsterdam I booked from here. If I were you I would keep it above 3*. Anything below that is a big hit and miss.

I've been to amsterdam quite a few times and where to stay kind of depends on what kind of experience you want.
For the true "Amsterdam Experience" , a central location, and great staff I would check out the Flying Pig Downtown.

    EDIT

Prob not suitable for you i'm afraid benny.
It does have minor kippish qualities.

Hostelworld.com do budget hotels and apartments as well as hostels. Allot of the hostels over there do cheap single rooms and apartments too, so you don't need to rule them out completely

I stayed in the Prins Hendrik hotel, small, clean and quiet with a nice little bar and resteraunt. Very well located beside Central station so it's not too far to walk with your bags and you can get a tram/train to anywhere from Central. Hotels.nl is a very good site. Again aim for 3 star and above.

Stayed near the musuem district once and it's too far away from where the nightlife is. Dam Square, rld etc.

    Expensive city though.

We stayed in Hotel Nadia on Raadhuisstraat - right near Anne Frank house and 5 -10 mins walk from Dam Square. Great location on a canal, lots of attractions within walking distance and tram stop nearby for those that are not. Rooms small but about standard for A'dam; very clean and well kept. Lots of great places to eat nearby.
