around the 1/8 or 1/9 mark in my book considering the Irish 2 mile chasers are weak enough and i can't imagine the likes of Voy Por will travel

1/9 an act of God. Dont think it would matter much if VPU came or not. And giving 7lbs as well.

I was lucky enough to see him in the flesh at C'ham.
    Awesome is the only word.
I knew my money was safe 2 out. Extraordinary.

The english seem to have cottoned on that french bred horses are almost generally more mature at the age of 5 and have reduced if not completely removed these allowances. For example 5yos had a great recent recod in the arkle but if memory serves me correctly a lot were french bred (azertyioup, voy por, champleve, only non french bred I can think of is Flagship Uberalles). Hopefully Master Minded will run, make a mockery of the system and it will be changed by the beginning of next season.

I saw Master Minded in the parade ring at Newbury when he thrashed Voy Por and trust me he looked anything but an 'immature' 5yo needing an allowance from older horses!!

Think the 5yo allowance has gone for the Arkle. The do get wfa throughout the year, less as he season progresses. Well Chief was a german bred 5yo winner. Its amazing that he still will get 7lbs in Ireland, but it has to be said that while the other winners were good, Master Minded looks like a freak. Who knows what he is capable of? Looks like a machine.

Colonel Sanders - re the 5yo allowance -

what you say is absolutely correct, French-breds mature a lot earlier than the more traditionally bred Irish (or the few English!) breds. Reducing or removing the allowance will level the playing field as it was clearly an unfair advantage for the French-breds, but what of the Irish bred 5yo chasers? Imo, they do deserve an allowance, but obviously the rules will never be changed to the extent that where the horse is born will factor into the weight allowances.

I'm not proposing a solution, but it's just more evidence of the trend for 'instant gratification'. It's been happening in flat racing for years, where horses are bred more and more for speed, and stamina is becoming less important. Connections want the horse to win as soon as possible, and that means 2yo speed.

Over jumps, the influx of French breds/flat breds to NH racing in recent years has been staggering, and their impact on top-class jumps racing no less so. But it's to be hoped that the later maturing NH-bred horses will not become neglected, and that's one of the major reasons I was delighted to see Denman win the Gold Cup. On the most eagerly anticipated race day with as wide an audience we've had in years, a great big beast of a horse proved that the young pretenders still have a lot to learn to match the old guard!
