haix is the operational boot that is issued now, there has been quite a few too, not sure what the parade boots are called but their useless!

Magnem boots are also issued, they are lighter but they are not waterproof like the hiax. Would much prefer hiax when out on the ground.

Anyone know anything about decent bergens/backpacks??Looking to get into some mountains again over the summer and I wouldn't mind having one similiar to Irish Army bergen/backpack to get the feel for it..and they'd have to be good quality so could anyone tell me if/where I could pick one up?I'd realy appreciate it!

Seriously a half decent camping/outdoors shop would supply you with something far superior to the army's pack.

There's a thread on backpacks in one of the travel forums here on boards.ie.

I think its too heavy for its size, it doesn't have a proper frame like you'll find on commercial packs - oh and the colour clashes with my eyes :D

btw, if your in Dublin I can give you a test drive - ie let you check out the army pack before you go and buy a commercial one.

Magnum is the barracks boot. I know some who binned the Haix in favour of Lowa but its a personal choice really.

Its not, there's still an all leather barrack boot to be worn with your No1's and I hear thats being replaced with a smooth leather boot something similar to the navy boot.

The new No. 1 boot is differant all together from what i heard, its like some sort of shoe/boot with no laces or somthing crazy like that.

But in terms of day to day working dress the magnum is the barrack boot I thought? I havn't seen ay other one being issued in ages. The Magnums are ****e for anything else other then the barracks.

Thanks for the offer mate, but I'm not in Dublin and probably won't be..Thanks anyway!:)

Btw,just do what goths do and get coloured lenses, that way when your half-way up a mountain or running around the Glen of Imaal, you can be safe in the knowledge that yer backpack will be matching your olive green ''eyes''!:D

Anyone know the exact make of the new parade boots?

Obviously they're Linkers, always been curious about the full name though.

The Haix boot issued to the army is similar to the Tibet model that can be found online, with the main difference that it uses D Rings instead of hooks for its lacing system and has a tab at the back for pulling the boots on. The barrack boot issued is the Magnum Amazon 6, which in turn is slowly being replaced by the Magnum Scorpion. The scorpions are fine for wearing around a barracks but not much else in my view. The haix aren't great and have a rather baggy upper and a poor lacing system - I much perfer a system of hooks as I find it is easier to lace quickly and it doesn't have as much slack as a full D-ring system. The linkers can't be found online, it looks quite similar to a shoe that they have in their range - if your ordering over a few hundred pairs most manufacturers will make alterations to an existing design as the customer requires.

Army day sack is the Lowe Alpine Saber and the Backpack is the Lowe Alpine Saracen with some production changes for the DF.

If your buying a pack for non military use, just go with a civilian pack. The technology is about two generations ahead of those on military packs and makes a huge difference to comfort. The saracen for instance uses the old APS (Advanced Paralux System) 5 back system - it isn't even on the lowe alpine website anymore and was replaced by the TFX system 3 or 4 years ago which offers greater comfort and freedom of movement. You'll also end up paying the "green tax" - ie military stuff ends up being around 10-20% more than the comparable civilian product because the production runs are lower for non contract (ie government) customers and the technology is older and because they know they have you by the nads - they're selling to a closed market and can charge what they want.

Berghaus Crusader all the way... looks almost identical to the saracen too.

I left the RDF after my three year contract, finished up at work around the same time, then came over to france and signed up for the Legion, that was six and half years ago, a friend of mine sent out a pair of scorpions about two years ago, and to be honest for running around here in the south of France and in Corsica during the summer months, they suited quiet well, and I'm sure if i had a pair for the jungles of Guyana they would of held up as well as the American jungle boots that i used, but then again anything is better than the French issue 'Rangers'

I can nothing but good things about the Lowe Mountain GTX boot, hard wearing, solid support and very very waterproof or the Lowa Urban 2 is a lightweight but sturdy boot.

I found Haix / Mendel to heavy / clunky.

    check out

www.rvops.co.uk for a good selection of boots
