downloaded a clip from the internet named .avi cant seem to find a codec for it i have a Combined Community Codec Pack installed so unless its a really rare one im guessing... is there anyway i can check if the file is corrupt or to check what codec i need? i tried GSpot with no luck. Is there anyway for me to force it to play or any ultimate codec list...

error message is: Windows Media Player cannot play the file. The Player might not support the file type or might not support the codec that was used to compress the file.
with similar messages with different programs with not being able to recognise what file format it is
    thanks in advance

Download vlc player and the k-lite codec pack. It's played everything I've thrown at it.

is it better then combined community pack? aparently they dont go well together
i tried vlc player and it did play but it lasted about 7 seconds and didnt have any audio or video.. but i guess thats a start...

tried both... no luck (lite pack + vlc player)

VLC also tries to fix corrupted .avi's so at least you can play the bulk of them. Go for the k-lite codec pack too. I often get strange bugs with .avis, some that even VLC won't play. Has this .avi ever worked? Is it created by you or downloaded?
Could be time to start looking for an alternate.

not created by me - downloaded - never worked...- tried vlc and tried lite....i think its probally corrupted by the looks of things but for the amount of time my connection takes to download it ( an hour or 2) im just a little disapointed i cant even see it.. :(

Its strange that vlc gave u 7 seconds of it. Did it attempt a repair? The repair tends to take ages and cut about half the original so that isnt worth it either. What I tend to do when say, BTing 100% legitimate and legal .avi's, is to download the same episode from more than one source, as its always possible that one is porn or unplayable.
Personally I prefer it when it's porn.

repair it using? i did do a data integrity check and it came up fine vlc player shows 0.00/0.00 constantly when i open it but the slider goes accross for about 7 -12 seconds
is there a repair method on vlc?

If VLC recognises that a file is corrupted upon opening it in VLC, it tends to prompt with something like "This file appears to be corrupted / unplayable, would you like VLC to try and repair it for you?"
At this point, if it does pop up, you can click yes, wait 20 odd mins for the repair, and then maybe get 10 minutes of the 30 odd you downloaded. So it is in fact more frustrating than just downloading it again.
But if you aren't even getting that, I would suggest deletion before your PC gets a nasty STD.

Use G-spot to see what Codec it's using, although it sounds like it's broken.

I have actually came across a .avi file that wont play in VLC but will play in Jet Audio. So it might be worth it trying that? It seems odd but that was the case?

if you are using WMP, then uninstall all your codec packs and VLC player and install FFDshow, this is the latest version that i'm personally using

    http://www.afterdawn.com/software/video_software/codecs_and_filters/ffdshow.cfm

If that doesn't work with WMP, try downloading Media Player Classic, it runs from the exe and is very light. It will work alongside ffdshow.

I have both of them installed on my HTPC and never have an issue running anything, from mov and mpg to avi and mkv
