Quicker than a rope?

There's no guarantee that crashing your car will result in instant death. You could end up paralysed or something instead.

It is becoming apparent that some of the single car road accidents on our roads may be suicide. I remember reading this in a paper a few weeks back.

yeah, it's quite worrying. i know there have been a couple around Galway recently that have raised suspicions.

Drink, Speeding, Sleep depravation and not concentrating on the road you will find will account for 99% of these accidents

Is there any real evidence to suggest that one car accidents are suicide ?

Sounds more like tabloid kite flying than anything else.

well that's the problem. no one can ever fully be certain in the majority of cases. but when the scene looks odd, investigation into previous medical history and background information sometimes lead the investigators to hold these suspicions.

Well, its 50,50 about 400 per year die on our roads, about 400 people commit suicide, The point I am making is how many of those road deaths are suicude ?

I know one guy who did actually fall asleep at the wheel and crashed.
No serious injuries to the passengers, but it does happen.
Funny thing is, he's a driving instructor now.

Nah.
That was 18 months ago.
I'm happy now.
Thanks anyway, Pete.

I just laugh at the irony of someone crashing into me before I got the chance to crash myself.

I think you have a valid point there.

If you were going to do it, it would be reasonable to assume certain death follows a high speed - no seat belt - head on impact.

Death is going to cause massive grief in any family, but suicide brings with it so many other things. There is also the personal insurance end of it. Suicide is not covered. So for many, who have the means to do it, I'm thinking it's an option.

One of Ireland's leading suicidologists notes the incidence, suggesting that 5 per cent of single-vehicle road deaths are suicides
Book Link. The quote is from a paper written in 1999.

This figure was reported as 10% last year, according to some (broadsheet) newspaper.
=-=

Why you ask? Because going along on a straight road, sober, having driven for years, suddenly hits a tree 2 meters off the road, at over 80kmph. Accident my arse.

• Closed Accounts Posts: 88,972 ✭✭✭✭mike65

I dont think this is any secret these days, it would be helpful if "accident" reports were published. Its only in the last few years that a proper crash team investigates every fatality.

Mike.

good link, my point entirely

Being a friend of two people who died by double suicide only a number of weeks ago, i can safely say that a good number of the single car collisions are planned. Using the rope brings with it so many negative stigma effects. At least a car crash can be covered up by the family/friends, and leaves people with "open-minds". Using an obvious suicide method like a rope or overdose leads to rumors, and so many other things, after death.

There is no doubt a percentage, however the Kildare county Coroner examined about 84 road deaths and only 1 was even suspected of suicide.

You'd be surprised. Remember that guy on the M1 who dropped his phone on the floor of the car and decided to go looking for it? Hit 5(?) cars on the other carraigeway.

IIRC they have a word for the practice in Germany, its so commen there.

Tbh, I can see the attraction as a method, it makes you into a victim, and lets your family forgo some awful questions.

Not to mention that insurance will pay to accidents, but some (american) companies have clauses against suicide. Sad, but true.
