    Hi Guys,

I'm coming up for review soon and I was wonder what should be ball park for desktop support. My primary support role is looking after our Linux workstations in house and supporting our european offices which includes servers. The main people I support are software and hardware engineers and I do lot of work testing new technologies vmware, vista (newish..) etc. I also have input into our global teams, for our linux standards and pgp. Also heavily involved in our deployment of new and existing systems, throw in a bit of scripting and general desktop support stuff, will also be taking over our configuration management for MS system in ireland in the next would month or so.

What would you expect for that kind of role?

Haven't a clue myself, but look at these guides for a basic idea, I suppose.

it's going to depend very much on the job itself, but as a (very) rough guide, a position ticking half the boxes for the skills you have mentioned I would say anything from €30k-€45k depending on how many years of experience you have and the specifics of that experience.

You haven't mentioned your age or experience, so I would agree with vibe666 that 30 - 45k sounds about right.

    Support is poorly paid.

25, been in this position for a year and change. Suppose in total I've over 2 years experience in support.

IT in this time is getting hammered
Jobs like that can pay anywhere from 25K to 35 K and lots are payng barely above 25 K and finding it difficult to even pay that as there is lots of bad stuff goi ng on prently

Some a few companies are flying and paying well but lots of them when push come to shove and cost of the job gets above 30K they opt for farming out the work to agency workers for less money and or doing online links to India and using Indians on line to sort out the servers from India

But don't let that stop you if they have decided to replace you next year with a $5000 a year Indian on line or even three of them your demanding 40K and getting it will be exactly the same as if you meekly ask for a 2% pay rise your head will be chopped off anyway in that culll next year

The warning signs that your job is going is the company trys to offer you shares which wont be bankable if you dont stay for three years ( translation your job will certianly not exist in two years ) or lots of dark guys from Asia spending several days on so called training exercises who are really there to see real time what the gear is they will work with online next year with the occasional long haul flight to come to Irealand to sort ti out or occasional input from local irish company

Roughly The very bigger or the very smaller the company you work for the smaller the chance you can expect a bigger pay hike as they have different reasons why they cant or wont pay extra

The smaller the office the Irish office is relative to the main eurozone office and the more medium sized it is the best chabce to get a good hike in pay and the less risk to lose the work to Hungary or India online outfits
Better still change careers while your ahead as the culls in IT get worse every year

Failing that do what one low end computer teck guy did in Dublin which was to convince the company to make him the sole controller of all the access security codes and one day when he have them totally by the goolies he found he could demand telephone number salary amounts for them to stay operational and there was SQAUT they could do about it

    Derry
