You probably have to format it

    Have you checked disk management?

    1. Log on as administrator or as a member of the Administrators group.
    2. Click Start, click Run, type compmgmt.msc, and then click OK.
    3. In the console tree, click Disk Management.

I think I am not making myself clear sorry. I can see the drive and access it. But it is the backup of my internal drive I cannot mount. The backup is visible on the external drive as 19 compressed images of around 4 gigs. I click on mount inthe O&O disk Image *software and this tells me the drive is mounted but I cannot see it or acces the files on it. Other files copied to the external drive and not compresssed are visible and can be accessed on the external drive. I hope this is clearer. Thanks

The version I have is DiskImage 2 Special Edition given free on a PC mag

i think that software is limited to making the backup , you have to buy the full version to do a restore with it , have a look at this thread on wilders security forum about it

No, I am sure you can restore a drive with it. From your link

"There might not be a boot disk but I don't care about that since I always restore from a second drive/OS"

I have my image on a second external drive
