Hi, I have been unemployed for the past year, and I was getting rent allowance on my old house I lived in (I lived there with 2 others) so my rent was under th 600europ/m limit.
Anyway, our lease was up at the end of last month and the landlord had new tenants moving in on the day we were moving out, so everything was just one big rush.

So I was panicking for weeks before trying to find a flat, and I finally found one but it costs 800p/m which is too high for rent allowance, so my Dad said he will help me pay the rent.

But I went to collect my Dole last week and it wasnt there, they said the reason was down to me not informing them of my moving house (as my rent allowance had stopped from the healthboard)

So, I dont know what to do now. If I tell them I'm living here they will want to know how I can afford it. My Dad said he can only help me pay for a few months and then I'll have to stay on my sisters couch again where I claimed from before a few years ago.

Please someone who knows tell me what to do. I'm not lazy, I genuinely cant work at the moment due to other things personal.

Please help me before I'm homeless and penniless!!!

It's better to get the rent allowance sorted first as this is what stopped your dole payments. Go to the health board and try to get the rent allowance paid again.

You didn't say if the new address is still in the same region as the dole office.
If not then get your current claim closed (it might be already) and go to the local dole office in your new area. Make a new claim there. This would be easier than trying to convince the original office to put you back into payment and then transfer your claim to a new office.

If you still live in the same area then bring in proof of the new address such as a bill or lease with your new address on it. The dole office should lift the suspension and pay you again. Also, bring in proof of looking for work as they could ask you about this because your payments have been stopped.

I cant work for personal reasons, thats why i dont want to open a new claim, cause my old dole office know all about my problem and are fine with it. If I open a new claim from my new apt. I will have to go thru a load of hoops again.
aND, MY APARTMENT IS too dear to even be considered for rent allowance, its over 600p/m for single person living alone, thats the limit for allowance.
So I wanted to claim my dole from my sisters who is from where my dole office is..
Can they find where you are living by contactin the PRTB if they give your PPS??

man be careful what you say these dole guys are out to make life difficult
the dole can only pay you if you are actively searching for work

if you are not looking for work they can chop you off
    unless
you have a medical reason in which case you get paid buy HSE and they are very difficult to get money from in general and presently seems even more difficult due to seems to be running out of cash

Also the governement got whole departments of very well paid civil servants to chase up little folk similar to us joe soaps and this often make life difficult for those of us that didn't get a perminant pensionable job with the civil service

For the rent question just brazen it out say you had no choice that was all that available and its short term and sometimes they cough up the extra buts its going to be jump through the hoops time which when the government income is going south fast means your risk to be stone walled is increased

I have got a medical reason for not looking for work. I am on a methadone program and attend my clinic every daY. So when I was first asked for proof of looking for work I told them I was on a maintenance program, and they just said to get a letter from the clinic as proof of my attendance there.

Next day I brought up a letter from the clinic saying that I am attending the clinic everyday and am on methadone, which makes you very tired 3hrs after taking it, not in a good way, just in a cant do anything have to lie down and sleep type of way.

That was fine with them; they never sent me out for interviews or asked for proof of job-seeking etc. since then, and that's 3 years ago now..
But i dont get paid by the HSE.. Can I get disability for this?

I was about to suggest you start a thread here.

As I siad on the other thread

"Pete, can I suggest that you talk to your social worker - if you don't have one, then ask your doctor / drug counsellor / CWO / social welfare to get you one - you might nominally have one already and you don't know it. Explain the situation and they can take care of things with the minimum of street."

I think talk to the CWO who might be able to give you an emergency payment. And ask the CWO and clinic if you have a social worker.

Thx so much for replyin , your a star.. There is a social/community welfare officer in my clinic on MON & TMRW.. she has an office in clinic. So I might go into her in morning and tell her about my prediacment.
It's 3 weeks now since I've been paid, thats nearly 600euro.
I've to pay my rent on TUESDAY coming.

Gonna call PROVIDENCE or someone like that tmrw and ask If I can get a lend of maybe 500, and ask friends&family for the other 300 to pay my rent on Tuesday.
I am so broke. I have cut down on smoking to 5 a day now, and I used to smoke 20.

Do you think being on methadone and weaning off it could be calssified under disability allowance, instead of Jobseekers, cause they know I cannot work.

I thought there was a specific scheme for people in your situation?

I think if you spent as much time looking for a job as you did leeching off taxpayers you wouldnt be in this mess.

pull the finger out, give up the smack (or whatever youre on) and get a job.

People who pays loads of tax are loaded? lol! Well some are but most are working poor, can't afford a house but at the same time see others get social housing or rent supplement like your good self. Not saying you're not entitled to it and this thread is to help you get your entitlements.
I think you're being a bit judgemental too as well! You got to admit it, come on now

Wait my friend until you get working again and you 41% tax, PRSI and BIK tax! I too pays loads of tax every week and I'm far from loaded. No rent supplement for me :(

Anyway you got sorted in the end, fair play

Why not rip of the government? For those of you that think that the social welfare or the tax office is a good thing - think again, you are only part of the same old story and mentality (go to school get a job and pay taxes) and yes they give money to people because they spend all life ripping of the poor citizen that goes to work every day the same for the tax office.
You are all being brain washed and manipulated!

    Poor guy???
He's renting a one bedroom flat which costs over €600 a month which the goverment won't pay for because it's over the limit, and he's on the dole

The dole is unemployment benefit paid to those unable to find work. Not those unable to work, so, which is it?

My suggestion? Move home until you sort yourself out.

Edit: Have just seen you are on methodone programme. Glad you are making an effort there, but I still think you should go home. The tax payer shouldn't be supporting your life-choice when you make no contribution to society.

Eh, have you ever had a job? Even people on low wages get 20% taken off for tax. I can't afford to smoke, and I've always worked since I was old enough. I suggest you give up luxuries like fags if the government isn't giving you enough free money to fund your entire lifestyle. I feel bad even looking into the dole to help cover my rent while I'm genuinely seeking work.

    You are just sad!

Anyway, I do feel bad sometimes that I dont have a job, I'd love to be able to get a job, but I genuinely am unable to work due to being on methadone and weaning down off it. And I cant move back home, cause I dont have a family home like most people.

At least I dont have any kids, so what about people getting 250per month for each kid they have whether they are working or not, and that new thing every 3 months, is everyone who receives that spongers too??

What if someone has cancer or no legs?? People dont be calling them wasters and scumbags cause they are on disability. Just cause You cant see anything physically wrong, that don't mean there aint a geuine reason for someone being unable to work..

I don't think your going to get an answer without personal judgment thrown in too, your best bet would be to contact your local social welfare office and explain the details to them, at most they will give you a yes or a no answer.
Another way of looking at things is to check out the services that are available to help you get back into the system. CE schemes provide training and skills (social and employment) while increasing your income and can be very helpful if you have been out of ths system for a number of years.
also, for what it's worth the monthly payments (childrens allownace) made to parents that you referred to comes in at 160 a month for one child.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 1,347 ✭✭✭legs11

OP you need to wake up and smell the coffee and get a job. your saying you cant work for ever again because of your meth thingy? hmmm, right.

and 600e a month for rent is a tad expensive for someone on the dole, so you wont get much reprise from people here who get up at 7am every day of the week and are hammered for tax.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 104 ✭✭peteburnshndbag

I pay back around 40euro a wk on tax on cigarettes , considering I spend 55 on them a wk, so in a way I am paying back most of it to the government anyways..

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 938 ✭✭✭the GALL

your choice was to do the drugs,
you choice was that life style,
you should have put down put down hearing loss on the disability form aswell,
    your disability is self inflicted,
you need to take responsibility for your actions.

Have you thought about how your going to survive when 'daddy' stops paying you rent after the three months maybe you'll just 'find' the money to live or better still someone will just give it to you.

Well if they don’t pay taxes, that’s a good thing?!! At least these people are out there working for a living and by not drawing the dole they are contributing, unlike you!

€600 for your one bed flat…. Very nice! And your dole! For doing what?

I understand that people make mistakes and find themselves in very dark places and need help…….. but your remarks, seem to me, as if you believe it’s your right!

I hope you get your life back on track and make a contribution to your life as well as those around you!
