Advice on buying set of irons online

    Hi

After some research and club testing, Ive decided i want to get a specific set of Taylor Made R7 irons - they retail in the main stores in Dublin for 599

On ebay it seems I can get exactly the identical set of clubs (same shafts, etc) brand new for 408 euro incl delivery to ireland from uk. The seller has all positive feedback and the price is "buy-it-now" as opposed to auction

My question is "where's the catch?", as it's a massive difference in price.

Are the retail stores really marking clubs up that much, or is there something I should know about these online sellers?

    TIA

Are you buying from the States or Asia online? If so there have been some issues around legit clubs vs knock offs. I have found that generally even the UK based resellers are significantly lower than Irish store prices for the same clubs but I guess the trade off is in personal service, come back, immediacy, etc.

I know I looked long and hard at these clubs and after talking to an Irish store was pointed in the direction of the Mizunos at around €200 less.....

If you are 80% happy that they are the right club for you then I would go for them but try to confirm they are legit in advance of purchase

if you are actually making the full saving then it sounds a good deal. however i'm not sure you are. You would likely get 100 off those irons if you ask in the shops here, which may bring the difference down to not worth the risk buying online.

I know the last set of irons/driver I got were bought in a local shop for cheaper than the equivalent ones online from any uk source.

However I have also bought plenty of stuff online, both from the US and the UK and have yet to have any issues. I find ebay to only usually be good value for older model clubs though.

I don't think there is a catch to be honest. I bought my irons from a reputable seller on eBay a few years back for €425 including delivery, they were €800 over here. TalyorMade's aswell. If feedback etc.. is good and you think the seller is reputable there is no reason not to go for it as the exchange rate is good for us at the moment (presuming it UK eBay). As suggested you can ask for a discount over here and see what happens.

Retail mark up over here on clubs is very high and online sellers can offer significant savings because overheads are lower, you just have to keep your eyes open and not deal with any seller from Hong Kong or the like or anyone with dodgy feedback.

    Good luck with the purchase

Gplf stores have to carry a lot of stock and their money is tied up for months on end. Ebay sellers usually carry much less stock and don't have to pay rates nor staff so they can sell for cheaper.

Thanks a million for all the feedback

Looks like I'll be buying online... the "online" store appears to be UK based and there is nothing but satisfied customers in the history log.
