Sounds of silence

Is there any quick fix magic application that can remove the background hiss of silence from an audio file? Quite a lot of the file is pretty quite too so I'd want to increase the volume on it but as it stands the hissing sound is almost deafening so upping the volume by itself would do bugger all for me :(

    thanks

    John.

Try lowering the High Frequencies in the EQ settings. What software are you using

Check out Audacity for noise reduction. Go to the Effect menu and select Noise removal. Noise reduction is always a bit of a cludge but you might be able to get some improvement. It'll help of you have a few seconds of noise on its own which Audacity can examine to make a noise profile, this'll give it a better chance of taking the noise out of your recording cleanly.
