About a year ago I was visiting China again with my wife, she is Chinese, and I noticed some of the markings from the Dharma logos on a piece of wood. I asked her about it and told her it was from a tv show I watch (Lost) but we got distracted and I forgot about it. Well I was watching Lost and she asked me what I was watching and she mentioned about the logo again and told me what it was.

She said they are from a 'Loupan' which is a Chinese compass and is linked with Feng Shui and time, and in feng shui it is often used as a ghost detector and mainly used to find the direction of your house. Anyway I looked up a little online and have some links if ye are interested in looking into it.

Also, for anyone who wants to know, the korean flag uses some of the workings of a loupan.

    Enjoy!!

Im pretty sure this has been mentioned a long time ago in the LOST threads, how the logos are based on the traditional Taoist bagua or pa kua ("eight trigrams" in Chinese).

    Its on Wikipedia also
