    Hey folks,

Is it possible for the read and write speed to a USB key can slowly get worse over time? I have a 4gb key here and I think the read speed has slowly degraded over the past 6 months that I have had it. Currently reads at about 13MB/s and writes at about 2MB/s, cant remeber what it was when I first got the key...maybe it wasnt any different but it just seems slower lately.

Im using USB 2.0 ports and I think the make of the key is Ultima.

    Defrag it.....:p

The memory inside a flash key can degrade over time, this is usually due to inpropper use of said key, such as unplugging it without using eject or saftely remove hardware.

Have you tried completly wiping it, and starting again ? Also, download Hdtune or HDtach and run a performance test on it to see what you get. Ive a few 4gb ones here ill test to see what i get.

Just ran a test on the 3 keys i have with me, all of them are 4gb. 1 is a cheap one the gf got me as a stocking filler, and the other 2 are more expensive high speed kingston models :

    another test

    8gb ocz rally 2 from shop4memory.com 54€
    rally2mg4.jpg

    1gb trekstore from powercity 10€
    trekstoretz7.jpg

i presume the differance is one is dual channel the other single?
cpu might make a differance too, above are for 1.4ghz pentium m, might try it on faster machine latter

    with e6600 cpu
    rally2 averages
    read: 29.4mb/s
    write: 8.4mb/s

    trekstore averages
    read: 15.3mb/s
    write: 2.4mb/s

Nah cpu wont make a difference to the speeds. I did all my tests on a work machine with a old p4 2.6 northwood.
