I have a macbook I ordered from apple over a year now
I've been using it pretty intensly up until recently ,when it wouldn't go through all the motions when I try to start it up
It basically doesn't get past the apple and the rotating circle at the beginning
What happened to cause the acting up was I was relaunching the finder because the airport(wireless broadand) was loading for a long time
probably to do with me using my relations wi fi (eircom ,the same as my own wi fi)
it then was taking a long time to relaunch the finder so I tried to restart and then shut it down but it still wasn't responding, so I held down the off button
and since then it's been a problem
I've tried disk utility which told me the hard disk was o.k
I also reset the pram and it still won't work
    any suggestions appreciated
also if someone could enlighten me as to what would happen if I reset it to factory settings
    Thanks

The gayly-titled "Mac Genius" is an Apple employee in an Apple store who specialises in fixing broken things. Clearly, he is a busy man.

What exactly happens? Does it just freeze? Screen go black? Restarts? Or does it continue spinning?

Will it allow you to do a clean install off the disc?

It keeps spinning for ages until I get fed up and switch it off

How long? It's spinning so it might be doing something. Try leaving it alone and see if it rights itself. If not you'll have to reinstall.

...If not you'll have to reinstall.

If you do this, remember to do an "Archive & Install" and tick the "Preserve Users and Settings" box, so that you keep all your stuff, and just replace the system.
