TodayFM, and news of what DIDN'T happen!

Has anyone else noticed that TodayFM seem to be developing a habit of reporting what didn't happen, or what might have been?

    2 examples:

On 10/3/08, Emily Tully reported about an Irish dog who didn't win Crufts, but "if he had won, he'd have been the first Irish dog to win at Crufts for 19 years." (or words to that effect!):(

A few weeks previously, it was reported (by Michael McMullen, I think) that an Irish golfer was lying in second place in some tounament, one shot behind Tiger Woods, but "he would have been level if Tiger hadn't Birdied the last hole."

Not that it would do any good, but on both occasions I texted them to say "Yeah, and if my aunt had balls she'd be my uncle!"

    I think "balls" is ok.

Its a desperate attempt to big up the Irish. Even the dogs! :p

Prolly a News and Media discussion tbh.

A lot of commentators in sport will do this too (not just the Irish) -
WC Final; if that had been x player, England would have scored a try and won the match. (Can't remember who Johnson said)

Last Irish match - If Horgan had scored we would have been 10-0 up and would have won.

It's a pity so much emphasis is put on could and would situations rather than spelling out or recognising what actually happens!!!

    🤪

It's resorted to when there isn't much news in the first place.

    Moved from Radio.

Feel free to move it back but I think this is more suited for News & Media.

While I haven't noticed that, I have noticed that they slip in the "news" that Today FM moved premises into as many links as possible. While this may be exciting to the people that work there, it doesn't make a rasher's difference to the people that don't. What with that, and parroting 2-day old stories from MSN's entertainment pages* as "celebrity gossip" before the 8am news, it's really gone to the dogs lately.

(*I only know this as I see the headlines after signing out of hotmail)

It explains why their in-studio audio sounds like sh1te though.
