To all those about to buy a wii ......

    My advice is dont.
The console has honestly been the biggest let down i have ever bought.
I sold my 360 to jump on the Nintendo bandwagon due to the appeal of Zelda
basically and the fad of motion sensing controllers.
First impressions were great, had wii sports going with 4 controllers over xmas
with the family. Great fun playing tennis even if u can only play best of 5
games which is very strange in itself. Game however has no longevity and
wii sports has not got a look since a Stevens Day.
I didnt mind as i looked at wii sports of a demo of things to come.
So off i went and got Zelda, now i had just completed the phantom hourglass
on the DS which i can honestly say is easily in the top 5 games i have ever
played. While not as good i still loved Zelda so i was happy enough.
After that though things fell apart for me and my wii.
Got Mario Galaxy, great graphics, controls didnt feel tacked on as in Zelda
but the game just didnt draw me in and honestly bored me to tears after
2 hours of gameplay. In fairness though i am not a platform action fan
or whatever category that game comes into.
Then i played metroid prime. Big fps fan from pc gaming and this just doesnt
come close to most pc games. Instantly forgettable as was the terrible
terrible red steel. Doesnt even deserve a 2 line review.
Next comes Mario Strikers a crap fifa street rip off but much less playable.
Awful is the only way to describe it.
So i looked around to find what games i should get from reviews and i came
to the conclusion that most of the games for the console are completely awful.
If the likes of rayman raving rabbids is one of the best games on the console then
being 25 i am obviously 15 years too old to play this thing.
It really is a childs console except for one or 2 games which are for the most
part available on other consoles (im lookin at you COD3).
There are games like res evil 4 and no more heroes which might prove great
but to give up an 360 with its tons of brilliant exclusives as well as the
cross platform games that are available makes me regret daily buying the wii.

My advice to anyone thinking of what console to get, forget about
revolutionary controllers and fitness mats and look at the games and their
quality. For me having 3 or 4 games on the wii after a year of it being on the
market is a sorry indictment of the console and how poorly it is being
    supported by 3rd party developers.
Hardware doesnt make the console, games do.
If i want to play nintendo games ill buy a gamecube for E40.
If i want to play console games on a regular basis i will be looking at the 360 or the PS3

And before someone starts saying i didnt give the console a fair shot i played
    Zelda,Mario Galaxy,Metroid,COD3,Rayman Raving Rabbids 2,Mario
Strikers,Tiger Woods 2008 and im in the middle of playing No More Heroes.
Only decent game so far is No More Heroes and even COD3 is poor compared
to other console editions with their much better graphics.
Buyandsell are about to get a new ad!

You are right in alot of ways. Third party support is very bad for the Wii so far. Alot of the third party games i've got have massively disappointed me. Tiger Woods 07, Madden 07 were just PS2 ports and bad ones at that.

Trauma centre was a portable game and didnt fit for me at least on a home console. Plus it got repetitive very quickly. It did give a glimpse of the potential of the motion controller though.

The next year doesn't look much better. I will buy Zack and Wiki soon and maybe Brother in arms, PES 2008 and possibly Okami as well. I can't think of any other good third party games on the horizon.

I have bought Zelda, Mario and Metroid and all of them were great. Zelda especially was fantastic.

Metroid was good as well. My first impressions of it were bad having never played a metroid before, i was expecting a good FPS. But its more of an adventure game really and when i realized i began to enjoy it. Standout moment or me was
on elysia when your going through the claustraphobic tunnels to retrieve a power cell and seeing all the metroids in the tanks. Then when the power goes off, they are released and come after you. Great atmosphere.

Back on topic though, i agree with you about Mario. Im enjoying it but can't see why every one is so in love with it. I much preferred super mario world or even new super mario bros. to it.

The wii is a first party console. Things are looking good in this sense with mario kart and wii fit on the way. The problem is that third parties are being a bit wary with nintendo after previous experience. I was reading Warren Spectors blog and he made the point that nintendo in the past have killed third party software by selling first party titles cheaper than the third parties can.

To all those about to buy a PS3 or 360, dont, because I dont like them.

Seriously, if you arent into these games, sell your console but why you feel the need to whinge about it here is beyond me. Some people love games like Mario Galaxy and Zelda so why ruin it for them with your negative comments. I can name hundreds of games I hate for a myriad of consoles but the few I like make them worthwhile for me. While I find the PC annoying to play games on, I wouldnt discourage others from potentially finding their dream games on it.

    A couple of points...

I felt the exact same frustration with Metroid Prime when I bought a Gamecube for it. I had been without a console and enjoying PC FPSes for years. I let it go by the wayside for a bit, while I completed Wind Waker. But after that, I came back to it, and decided to stick with it. Instead of approaching it as a FPS, I just thought of it as an action adventure somethingajig, a bit like Zelda, and I really started enjoying it a lot more. Brought back a lot of awesome memories of Super Metroid.

Second, if you "loved" Twilight Princess, how can you say No More Heroes was the only decent one? :P

Third, get Trauma Centre: New Blood. It and its predecessor are still the best use of the Wiimote's pointing abilities.

Fourth, I'm not sure when Super Smash Bros Brawl comes out there, but get it as soon as you can. I used to think the series was just a cut-down, badly-designed beat 'em up with the likes of tekken and what-have-you out there. But after a while with Melee, I started to appreciate the depth and strategy involved. I bought Brawl just after midnight on Sunday morning, and since then, the in-game stats say I've played it for almost 26 hours. Which is pretty ridiculous in three days with work and all !

That is all. I love my Wii, but at the end of the day, if you give it a fair shot, and it's NOT working out for you, don't worry about it and move on.

You should have put that closer to the start of your post, so people knew you'd be talking nonsense from the get-go ;)

Joke! joke joke! But seriously, PC gaming is God.

I got a wii at christmas, and it's great, it's been played every day since we got it. Mostly wii sports, this isn't a console for standard games, more for fun multiplayer games. Don't expect something it's not intended to be.

Everyone is entitled to their opinion i suppose :)

To anyone about to buy a Wii...

Mario Kart Wii and Super Smash Bros Brawl within the next 2 months... Buy it.

got one after christmas, only games i play on it are gh3 and lego star wars. thats it. kinda pointless now.

xbox is my console of choice, and i havent had a gaming pc in 5 years.

my 2 cents, more than happy with with 360, probably get a PS3 when its established with a few more games, but disapointed with wii. can only play it with another 3 people to get moneys worth.

i went for the threesome, the PSWii60, as it was affectionately dubbed, and i can say i agree with the OP. I did throughly enjoy the game in it's initial days, finding the control system inovative and fun and the multiplayer was hours of craic, but for anyone serious about gaming, this is not the console for you. I'd recommend the Xbox360 at the minute or the PS3 if you are buying in the summer with it's titles coming out.

I still play wii sports nearly a year after I got it. Great game. 10/10
Mario strikers charged is also a good game could just do with some extra tournament types. 8/10
Medal of Honor heroes 2 is another 8/10 game well worth playing.
Madden nfl '08. 9/10 great game and the new motion controls made the game worth playing, I wouldn't get it if I just had the usual Control pad interface.

With PES 2008, Mario Kart and Brawl to come aswell as snooker and wii fit the wii is a very attractive option. Its not going to tick every gaming box but it covers the bases well enough for it to be a worthwhile purchase.

My apologies its has 2 games :D
My point is there is a shocking bad selection of 3rd party games and even
some of the big Nintendo games arent great.
Ports of games from other consoles are never at the same level and for
these reasons i feel the gimmick of motion sensing controls and 2 games
doesnt warrant spending €300 on a console.
Oh and lets not even start to talk about "friends codes" and the shocking
    online capabilities!!!!!
Its a console for people who are not gamers.
Thats all im trying to say.

He has a point about third party software. Theres only so many first party games im going to play. Nintendo make some great games but they do make them over and over again. Now im looking forward to mario kart like everyone but ive played it already on the DS. Im sure others here have bought it and played it many times in the past 10 years since the SNES. Third party games are badly needed.

For HardCore gaming you need a PC not a console IMO. The new PC's are already more powerful than the next gen consoles, Crysis on max resolution= gaming nirvana. WoW being another example, you cant call yourself a serious gamer until you've pwned some noobs in Arena with your LvL 70 Epixx Toon or Ganked some Horde/Alliance lowbie's.

Or you might just not be able to afford constantly updating your hardware??

I didnt even say hardcore gaming, the wii is barely adequate for very casual
gaming, frustrating for anyone with a serious interest in games and completely
    worthless to a hardcore gamer.
Thats my view of the thing

It's a damn good thing that a lot of people disagree.

I love my Wii, and play it regularly, along with my PC, 360, DS and PSP

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 10,304 ✭✭✭✭koneko

I disagree, I'd consider myself a "hardcore" gamer, and the Wii is far from useless. Just don't get it as a replacement for a 360 or PS3, it compliments them, it's not meant to be a replacement for them.

In the last couple of weeks I've been (re)playing RE4, Zack and Wiki, Endless Ocean, Super Mario Galaxy, and hopefully this weekend No More Heroes and SSBB. Except for RE4, they're games you can't play on anything else. It doesn't replace playing Bioshock, COD4, Dead Rising etc (the other game I've been re-playing this week), and it isn't meant to. I would never sell my 360 to replace it with a Wii.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 615 ✭✭✭NunianVonFuch

Rather than trade/sell it why don't you just get the Freeloader and Smash Bros Brawl now? If that doesn't do it for you then get rid of it.

I still have my Wii but picked up a 360 last summer as there aren't enough games for the Wii worth getting as you say, but those that are, are brilliant.

COD3 was poor compared to others because the aiming was pants! Felt more like steering or something. Excitetruck is worth picking up too as it's a good laugh. No Burnout:Paradise mind, but I found myself getting way more into the game due to the steering with the Wiimote.

New PES:2008 on the Wii looks class. Finally being able to plan runs and plays makes it more tactical than 360/PS3 with some of the previews saying its the first next-gen PES. Obviously wait for reviews but after the gimped 360 online for PES 2008 personally I need a football fix! Out end of March. As is Manhunt 2 if you're into that kind of thing. Alone in the Dark is getting its own special Wii version and Bully on the Wii is apparently better than the 360 version due to its Godfather-like controls.

Oh also the Godfather! Fighting was way more fun on the Wii. Game itself is very repetitive but the reviews concluded it was best on Wii.

To answer your original point though about 3rd party, its mainly because after the Gamecube floundered in its support of 3rd parties only Ubisoft really jumped on board with Wii games. After its success then Xmas 2006 other companies leapt on board but games take time so it's going to be this Christmas before we see decent 3rd party titles other than ports (be they good or bad).

Also what Koneko said: It compliments another console. On one you have processor intensive games :-D controlled with analogue sticks :-( whilst on the Wii you have games easy on the processing :-( controlled with motion sensing and an analogue stick :-D

World of Warcraft is a game?

A short list of third party Wii games I've enjoyed:
    Resident Evil: Umbrella Chronicles
    Geometry Wars Galaxies
    Eledees
    Super Monkey Ball Banana Blitz
    Sin & Punishment
    Alien Soldier
    Gunstar Heroes

A longer list of third party Wii games that are either coming out soon or that I haven't got around to yet, but am excited about playing:
    Sega Superstar Tennis
    Zack & Wiki
    Dewy's Adventure
    Trauma Center: New Blood
    Mercury Meltdown Revolution
    Endless Ocean
    NiGHTS
    Ghost Squad
House of the Dead 2 & 3 Return
    No More Heroes
    World of Goo
    Star Soldier R
    Eternity's Child
    Gravitronix
    Lost Winds

Obviously, YMMV, and some of the ones I haven't played aren't going to live up to expectations, but that's 22 third party games of interest. A pleasingly varied bunch too. Slight bias for shooters, but then that's only sensible.

Joke! joke joke! But seriously, PC gaming is God.

I spend the entire day programming on a PC so whenever I play games on it, I tend to treat it with the same disdain as I do my work. Its just a personal preference. Plus, getting things to run smoothly in Linux without destroying my simulations is a pain.

I got rid of my 360 today for store credit it was just gathering dust and it seemed to have hit its full potential I think the Wii and Ps3 seem to be the future at the moment but that is just going with my taste alone. If you don't like the Wii thats fair enough I just said that I didn't like the xbox 360 but there are millions world wide that would disagree

okay i love my nintendo wii, but its suits me. Im not a serious gamer. I dont have a lot of time on my hands. someti,es i like to bash away at it for an hour or two and come back a few days later. i think the wii caters for people like myself. i play table tennis, wii sports, medal of honour (although its not great). the real bonus for me is the virtual console although the catalogue has slowed since xmas its still good. its nice to be 26 and be able to come home for a mindless game of mario kart, or sonic the hedgehog etc, so for reasons like this and being able to relive my youth, i vote for the wii!

I have to admit that the Wii has a severe lack of quality games on it. However just like the Gamcube this makes it an excellent compliment to another console like a 360. As a compliment to a 360 it's absolutely perfect, my PS3 hasn't been touched in months and I have literally only used it for about 12 hours of gameplay. The Wii doesn't have enough games to keep you playing without getting bored but there really are some unmissable exclusives on it like Mario Galaxy, Metroid Prime 3 (anyone comparing this to an FPS is missing the point entirely, it's more like zelda than anything) zelda and by far the best selection of downloadable content of all the consoles if you don't mind paying slightly over the odds for old classics.

However what makes it an absolute essential is how good it is as a party machine. Not only have you got Wii sports and the minigame compilations but you have access to all the great Gamecube multiplayer games and the back catalogue of classics (bomberman and mean bean machine get the most play at Wii parties). Then you have Wii Mario Kart on the way along with Brawl and Wiiware games such as the recently announced 8 player bomberman (pity it isn't 10 like the classic saturn version). It's a much better machine in this regard considering a lot of games on the 360 and PS3 are losing their split screen modes to online modes and extra HDR effects.

For crying out loud i was bemoaning the severe lack of decent games for the
console and was basically saying that anyone thinking of buying one should
look at this fact before buying one
There is a lot more substance to that than your pointless response
If you have nothing to contribute to this "pointless thread" then why

have to say ive been tempted to buy a wii.

Going to gran canaria for 4 months and will need somthing to pass the time. going with my girlfriend and figure wii might be a bit of fun.

But ive jsut never been into nintendo games.... and the wii doesnt look great to me. They look like a game you play for 30 mins then turn off the console, not great depth or anything.

Nintendo always came across as a kids console for me, as i found the games to childish and colourful for my liking.

probably going to avoid it, but there like 150 over there so you never know.

If she's interested in playing it then it'll be a great laugh and I'd definitely recommend it. The Wii was like an "introductory drug" for my girlfriend and after hours of bowling, rabbids and Warioware she now has her own DS, has finished Gears on Co-op on all 3 difficulties and is eagerly awaiting my imported Smash to play this eve. If you think you can turn her to the dark side then its worth it! :)

My girlfriend never really played games much, apart from the odd go on Need For Speed. I got her playing Mario Galaxy, and she's since started and finished Windwaker, got her own DS, addicted to Brain Training, almost finished Phantom Hourglass, and is always checking what games I have so she can try/steal them :D
